Houses of History: Social History<\/p>\r\n

\u00a0Social history or new social history is the field of history that focuses on the lived<\/span> <\/span>experience of the past. <\/span>The field grew exponentially in the mid 19<\/span><\/span>t<\/span>h<\/span><\/span> century but primarily in the 1960s and 1970s.[<\/span><\/span>1]<\/span><\/span> <\/span>New social history which came grew together in the 1960s in the United King<\/span>dom as well as the U.S and Canada many of the <\/span>ideas<\/span> <\/span>derivative<\/span> of the <\/span>French <\/span>annales<\/span> school of history.<\/span> The idea of new social <\/span>history is the idea of studying an entire society.[<\/span><\/span>2]<\/span><\/span> Old social history in contrary was created to <\/span>oppose mainstream history and try to put the historical point of view in the eyes of the people instead of the <\/span>elite and leaders of nations. [<\/span><\/span>3]<\/span><\/span> New Social<\/span> <\/span>history is the <\/span>most referred form in recent use. <\/span>The studies became widespread after the publication of E.P Thompson\u2019s \u201cThe Making of the English Working <\/span>C<\/span>lass\u201d<\/span> the book shows the development <\/span>of the working class in England from 1780-1832. The time span covered<\/span> <\/span>emphasizes the growing consciousness of the working class in England<\/span>; they began to disassociate themselves with the greater state and instead moving in their own greater interests. [<\/span><\/span>4]<\/span><\/span> E.P Thompson commonly identified as a Marxist historian and he widely expanded Social History and socialism through his written work as well as his work as a leader of the peace movement during the Cold War.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

E. P<\/span> Thompson\u2019s \u201cThe Making of the English Working Class\u201d <\/span>is one of the most influential<\/span> historical writings in the second half of the 20<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> century as well as one of the most cited pieces of text<\/span> by other historians. <\/span>The book created a wider meaning to the class sys<\/span>tem in the U.K, especially the working class<\/span>. <\/span>Thompson\u2019s work in this book touched on the working class becoming its own political being. The class being the lowest of the low in the period and working in horrible conditions with little rights. The conditions in <\/span>which <\/span>they<\/span> worked <\/span>normalized<\/span> up until the point of <\/span>1830,<\/span> <\/span>when<\/span> in Thompson\u2019s eyes the class <\/span>formed its own political identity and began to create <\/span>upheaval <\/span>regarding<\/span> their human rights and economic structure. [<\/span><\/span>5] Thompson looked to <\/span>create a wider narrative for the working class in England which was much <\/span>overlooked by other theorists of the time with the growth of English democratic capitalism. <\/span>The Making <\/span>creates the narrative for the artisans and shows their day-to-day <\/span>lives and the struggles that they faced. The Making bring<\/span>s the prime example of the development of a group of people and how they can band together to create change politically <\/span>in a system where they have not been represented in a fair manner.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"E\r\n\r\n[9]\r\n

<\/span><\/span>E.P Thompson <\/span>in his younger life was a tank troop leader in Africa and Italy during World War two<\/span>. <\/span>After Thompson\u2019s <\/span>tenure in the English military, he attended Corpus Christi College in Cambridge and that is where he j<\/span>oined the Communist Party of Great Britain<\/span> in 1946<\/span>. [<\/span><\/span>6]<\/span><\/span> <\/span>As turmoil grew within the communist party and the Soviet Union invaded Hungary E.P Thompson and many others made the decision to leave <\/span>the communist party all together. The direction in which the party was headed did not align with Thompson<\/span>\u2019s views as a \u201csocialist humanist.\u201d\u00a0<\/span> Thompson then sought out to create a journal in which explained some of the <\/span>new <\/span>ideas<\/span> <\/span>regarding<\/span> Marxism, Communism, democratic and labor movement ideas.<\/span> This was called \u201c<\/span>t<\/span>he New <\/span>Reasoner\u201d<\/span> launched in 1957 and then <\/span>later merged into the publication with the New Left review<\/span>.<\/span> The \u201cNew Reasoner\u201d was the foundation of the New Left.<\/span> <\/span>The <\/span>N<\/span>ew <\/span>L<\/span>eft was a group of leftist<\/span> dissident Marxists<\/span> <\/span>that were advocates for the <\/span>disarmament<\/span> of nuclear weapons<\/span> in the 1950s and 60s<\/span> formed during the cold war divide<\/span>.[<\/span><\/span>7]<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Even before leaving the Communist party, Thompson was a strong member of the Communist-supported peace movement, which was anti-nuclear bomb and pro peace<\/span>. <\/span>Thompson felt that the cold war was a major fracture in the world and creating peace and healing was just as important as the removal of nuclear missiles. Thompson <\/span>became a forefront advocate for the disarmament of nuclear weaponry <\/span>he gave many strong speeches <\/span>regarding<\/span> Britain\u2019s involvement in NATO a<\/span>nd his quote \u201cNATO out of Britain, and Britain out of NATO.\u201d <\/span>Large crowds gathered in protest in British involvement in the Cold war and the push for a nuclear free Europe<\/span>. E.P Thompson was never one to be quiet when it came to the involvement of nuclear weapons and the social movements ag<\/span>ainst them. This short docum<\/span>e<\/span>n<\/span>t<\/span>a<\/span>r<\/span>y<\/span> <\/span>i<\/span>ncludes <\/span>firsthand<\/span> interviews <\/span>regarding<\/span> E.P Thompson\u2019s influences, his early work including the <\/span>\u201cThe Making of the English Working Class,\u201d as well as his involvement in the New Left and the <\/span>peace movement against the Cold War<\/span>. The visual and description of this large peace group rallying against potential n<\/span>uclear war has\u00a0its own social history that E. P Thom<\/span>pson was directly involved in. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
