Clever rivalry among media specialists is not something new to the <\/span>U.S. <\/span>radio-industry. The <\/span>astonishing <\/span>success of television during the post-war <\/span>years <\/span>dramatically <\/span>diminished <\/span>the size of radio\u2019s listening audience. Starting in the 1950s, successful <\/span>radio <\/span>broadcasters <\/span>fought <\/span>the rapid advancement of television by overhauling some of their <\/span>out-of-date <\/span>programs. Many influential large <\/span>radio <\/span>outlets including <\/span>Westinghouse\u2019s KYW <\/span>rose to the occasion. In the case of KYW, its <\/span>hands-on <\/span>approach towards broadcasting enabled that 50,000-watt <\/span>radio <\/span>giant to <\/span>regularly <\/span>exercise <\/span>its leadership role during its nine-year tenure in Cleveland.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nIts ability to <\/span>set <\/span>aside its middle-of-the-road format in the <\/span>early <\/span>1960s to become a leading Top 40 contender demonstrated KYW\u2019s determination to succeed using <\/span>sensible <\/span>program<\/span> <\/span>improvements. This book will explore some of the methods used to achieve its <\/span>business objectives <\/span>and what lessons we might learn from <\/span>it<\/span>s experience<\/span>.
