At issue was an a story that day in The Plain Dealer that appeared to be a \"retraction\" of earlier reporting identifying Presser as a federal informant. The unbylined story prompted an immediate picket of the newspaper by PD reporters. Presser held a press conference later that afternoon, declaring that the story vindicated him. Years later, Presser's crime associates testified before Congress that the story had been arranged by the mob to help Presser in his attempt to become president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
