At issue was an a story that day in The Plain Dealer that appeared to be a &#8220;retraction&#8221; of earlier reporting identifying Presser as a federal informant. The unbylined story prompted an immediate picket of the newspaper by PD reporters. Presser held a press conference later that afternoon, declaring that the story vindicated him. Years later, Presser&#8217;s crime associates testified before Congress that the story had been arranged by the mob to help Presser in his attempt to become president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
