Chapter 11 – The Teaching Profession

11.6 Qualifications, Skills & Competencies

To become a teacher, the first requirement is an appropriate educational background. Teachers typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field, with a focus on either elementary or secondary education. In addition to a degree, teachers must complete a state-approved teacher preparation program, which includes both coursework and practical experience through student teaching. After completing these steps, aspiring teachers are required to pass state certification exams, such as the Praxis tests, to obtain a state teaching license. Licensure is necessary for teaching in public schools and may require periodic renewal, often involving ongoing professional development.

Beyond educational qualifications, successful teachers must have several soft skills that are essential for creating a positive learning environment. Patience is crucial, as teachers work with students of varying abilities and learning styles. Strong communication skills are also necessary for explaining complex concepts clearly, engaging students, and collaborating with colleagues and parents. Adaptability is another key trait, as teachers must often modify lessons to meet the diverse needs of their students or respond to unexpected challenges in the classroom.

In addition to soft skills, teachers need technical skills to navigate modern educational tools and technologies. Many classrooms use learning management systems (LMS), educational software, and digital tools for instruction, grading, and communication. Being comfortable with technology, including using platforms like Google Classroom or Zoom, is increasingly important. Teachers should also be skilled in classroom management, which involves organizing the learning environment, maintaining discipline, and fostering a productive atmosphere for all students.

Combining formal qualifications with the right mix of soft and technical skills enables teachers to not only meet academic standards but also build meaningful connections with students and contribute to their success.
