Chapter 14 – Community Development & Housing
14.2 Affordable Housing
Affordable housing refers to housing that costs no more than 30% of a household’s gross income, allowing residents to cover essential expenses such as food, healthcare, and transportation. For low-income families, finding housing that meets this standard can be challenging due to rising costs, stagnant wages, and limited availability. Nonprofit organizations address these challenges by developing and preserving affordable housing options and supporting homeownership.
In addition to CDCs, other nonprofits in Northeast Ohio provide affordable housing. These organizations work to improve living conditions, promote sustainable development, and support underserved populations. They often coordinate with CDCs to expand their impact across neighborhoods. Their efforts not only help individuals in need but also contribute to the overall stability of communities.
A prime example is Habitat for Humanity, which has helped hundreds of families in Northeast Ohio achieve homeownership through its home-building projects. Volunteers and future homeowners work together to construct these homes, fostering a sense of community and long-term stability. By increasing access to safe, affordable housing, Habitat for Humanity reduces vacancy rates and supports neighborhood revitalization.
Another organization is CHN Housing Partners, which takes a comprehensive approach to affordable housing. CHN develops and preserves rental and homeownership opportunities for low-income families, administers home repair and weatherization programs, and provides financial counseling and homebuyer education. In addition to building and managing housing units, CHN collaborates with public and private partners to address regional housing challenges. Its programs help families secure stable housing while also promoting financial empowerment, giving residents the tools to maintain long-term housing security.
