Chapter 14 – Community Development & Housing

14.6 Qualifications, Skills & Competencies

A career in nonprofit housing and community development requires a blend of educational background, technical expertise, and soft skills. Many roles in this field, such as project managers, housing coordinators, and community outreach specialists, often require a bachelor’s degree. Common fields of study include urban planning, public administration, nonprofit management, social work, or a related discipline. Some positions, especially leadership roles, may also prefer or require a master’s degree in fields such as urban planning or public administration.

Technical skills are essential for many roles in this sector. For example, knowledge of urban planning is crucial for those involved in designing and developing housing projects or revitalizing neighborhoods. Project management skills are highly valued, as many professionals must oversee the planning, execution, and completion of housing developments. This includes managing timelines, budgets, and coordination between contractors, volunteers, and local government agencies. Understanding housing policy, zoning laws, and funding mechanisms like tax credits for affordable housing is also important.

Soft skills are equally critical in nonprofit housing work. Community engagement is a key competency, as professionals often work directly with residents, volunteers, and local organizations. Building trust and effectively communicating with diverse groups is essential to the success of housing initiatives. Leadership skills are important, especially for those overseeing teams or managing large projects. This includes the ability to inspire others, make decisions under pressure, and navigate complex challenges with limited resources.

Overall, careers in nonprofit housing and community development require a combination of formal education, practical experience, and both technical and interpersonal skills to successfully improve housing and create stronger communities.
