Chapter 17 – Religious & Faith-Based Organizations

17.4 Leading by Example: Nuns, Rabbis, Pastors & Priests

Leaders in faith-based communities—whether they are pastors, priests, or nuns—can serve as spiritual guides and community advocates and make significant contributions to both their congregations and the broader society.

Sister Kathleen Ryan, SND, has made significant contributions through her work with Catholic Charities in Cleveland, where she served for over 25 years. As part of the Social Action Office, she focused on advancing social justice initiatives, particularly in areas such as refugee resettlement, peace advocacy, and environmental stewardship. Her leadership in Catholic Charities allowed her to create programs that addressed the needs of marginalized communities.

In addition to her work with Catholic Charities, Sister Kathleen co-chairs the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Committee for the Sisters of Notre Dame, continuing her lifelong commitment to justice and service.

A prominent active rabbi in Northeast Ohio is Rabbi Joshua Skoff, who has been serving as the Senior Rabbi at Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights since 1990. Rabbi Skoff is highly regarded for his intellectual depth, warm leadership, and ability to make Judaism relevant in the everyday lives of his congregants. Recognized by The Jewish Forward as one of “America’s Most Inspiring Rabbis,” Rabbi Skoff leads a wide range of programs, from religious services to community outreach and education. He has built a strong connection with both his synagogue and the greater Cleveland community, engaging people of all ages and fostering a sense of unity and spiritual growth.

Pastor Dr. Joe Coffey of Christ Community Chapel in Hudson, Ohio leads a large evangelical church with multiple campuses in Northeast Ohio. He is known for his conservative theology and commitment to community outreach, including programs that address local poverty, support for foster children, and missionary work. Under his leadership, Christ Community Chapel has become a hub for both spiritual guidance and community service, engaging in projects that reflect traditional Christian values.

Rev. Dr. Jawanza Colvin is the pastor of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland. Known for his strong leadership in the community, Dr. Colvin has been a driving force behind numerous initiatives aimed at promoting social justice and improving the lives of Cleveland residents. Through his work, he has led programs that address issues such as poverty, racial inequality, and education.

After completing his Master of Divinity degree with high distinction from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Father Dean dedicated his ministry to community outreach.
