Chapter 19 – Philanthropy & Grantmaking

19.9 What It Takes to Lead

Leading philanthropic initiatives in Cleveland requires a blend of strategic vision, a deep understanding of local challenges, and strong relationship-building skills. Leaders in this field need to be skilled at vision-setting—establishing clear, impactful goals that align with both the foundation’s mission and the needs of the community.

In Cleveland, where issues like economic revitalization, public health, and education are priorities, effective leaders must also have knowledge of regional dynamics, understanding the historical and social factors that shape the city’s needs. Additionally, collaboration and communication skills are essential, as leaders often work closely with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and community groups to create broad-reaching, sustainable change. Finally, leaders must be adaptable, able to navigate the complexities of philanthropic funding, measure impact, and adjust strategies as community needs evolve.

Cleveland is home to several philanthropic leaders whose work has driven meaningful change in the community. Ronn Richard, the former President of the Cleveland Foundation, is recognized for his commitment to revitalizing Cleveland through projects that address key issues like public health, education, and environmental sustainability. His leadership reflects a strategic approach to philanthropy, using foundation resources to promote long-term development and inclusive growth in Northeast Ohio.

Another notable leader is India Pierce Lee, the former Senior Vice President for Program at the Cleveland Foundation. With a focus on equitable economic development and youth empowerment, she has overseen initiatives that enhance opportunity for Cleveland’s underserved populations. Lee’s work highlights the importance of aligning foundation resources with the specific needs of the community and collaborating closely with local organizations to achieve lasting impact. Both Richard and Lee exemplify the leadership skills required to navigate Cleveland’s philanthropic landscape, driving strategic philanthropy that creates tangible benefits for the region.
