8.13 Vocation vs. Avocation

Even if you’re not able to commit to a full-time career in city planning, there are still meaningful ways to support the field. Volunteering with local community groups or organizations focused on urban development is one way to contribute. These groups often work on projects like improving public spaces, advocating for affordable housing, or promoting sustainable practices.  

In Cleveland, community development corporations (CDCs) are a prime example of local community groups involved in urban planning and development. These organizations work at the neighborhood level to address housing, economic development, and community engagement.  

One prominent example is Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO). This CDC focuses on revitalizing the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood through initiatives like affordable housing development, historic preservation, and creating vibrant public spaces. DSCDO also advocates for sustainable practices and works to ensure that development benefits all residents, particularly those who are most vulnerable.  

Another example is Slavic Village Development, which has been instrumental in revitalizing the Slavic Village neighborhood. They focus on improving housing conditions, supporting local businesses, and creating community spaces, all while involving residents in the planning and decision-making process.  

By volunteering with or supporting organizations like these, individuals can make a significant impact on their community’s development, even if they are not professional city planners.  

Advocacy is another powerful tool—by attending public meetings, participating in planning discussions, and voicing your opinions on urban issues, you can help shape the future of your community. Additionally, philanthropy offers an avenue for support; donating to nonprofits and initiatives that focus on urban planning and development can help fund important projects that make cities more livable and inclusive. These actions allow you to have an impact on city planning, even if it’s not your full-time profession.
