Chapter 14 – Community Development & Housing

14.17 Compensation & Benefits

There is a wide disparity in compensation across nonprofit housing organizations. Salaries in this sector depend heavily on the role, the size of the organization, and its funding base.

Salaries in the nonprofit housing sector can vary widely depending on the role, organization size, and location. Entry-level positions, such as volunteer coordinators or community outreach specialists, typically offer salaries ranging from $35,000 to $45,000 per year. Mid-level roles, like project managers or program directors, can earn between $50,000 and $70,000 annually, while senior leadership positions, such as executive directors of nonprofits or CDCs, can earn upwards of $80,000 to $120,000. However, these salaries are generally lower than what similar roles might earn in private sector development firms.

Nonprofit housing jobs often include other benefits. Many organizations provide health insurance and retirement plans. Some offer flexible work schedules, which can help with work–life balance. Some do not. Employees also might have access to professional development opportunities, such as workshops, conferences, or certification programs, that allow them to build skills and strengthen their careers.
