Chapter 12 – Navigating the Local Government Hiring Process

Note to Readers

This textbook is a work in progress. It will continue to grow and improve as I add new ideas. Here’s what I’ve got on navigating the local government hiring process.

Finding a job in local government often starts with knowing where to look. Many cities and counties in Northeast Ohio post open positions on their official websites. Several use statewide platforms like OhioMeansJobs and commercial sites such as indeed.com.

The hiring process typically includes an online application, screening by human resources staff, and interviews with supervisors or panels. Some jobs require written tests or assessments. After an offer is made, applicants often go through background checks or other clearances.

Here are some local government job boards to explore.

Civil Service in Local Government

Civil service jobs are government positions filled through a merit system that often involves exams, eligibility lists, and clear rules for hiring and promotion. These jobs are meant to ensure that applicants are judged on qualifications rather than political connections.

In Northeast Ohio, a large share of local government positions fall under civil service rules. People considering careers in city or county government should expect that many of the jobs they apply for will require going through the civil service process.

Patience is necessary because the process can take much longer than in the private sector.
