Chapter 16 – Arts & Culture

Arts and culture nonprofits in Northeast Ohio provide spaces for creative expression, preserve artistic traditions, and make performances, exhibitions, and cultural programs accessible to the public. From internationally recognized institutions like the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art to community arts centers and independent theaters, these organizations support artists, engage audiences, and contribute to the region’s cultural identity.

Beyond showcasing art and performance, these organizations also serve as educators and advocates. They offer arts education programs for students, professional development for emerging artists, and initiatives that bring the arts into public spaces. Many also work to expand access by making their programs more inclusive, ensuring that people of all backgrounds and abilities can participate. At the same time, digital technology is reshaping how the arts are created and experienced, with virtual exhibits, live-streamed performances, and interactive media playing a larger role in audience engagement.

This chapter explores the range of careers available in arts and culture nonprofits, from creative roles in performance and curation to behind-the-scenes jobs in production, administration, and fundraising. It also examines the challenges of sustaining arts organizations, particularly in funding and audience development, and how institutions across Northeast Ohio are adapting to a changing cultural landscape.
