Chapter 13 – Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector

A nonprofit is an organization that works to achieve a specific goal, not to make money for owners. Unlike businesses that aim to earn profits, nonprofits focus on helping people or improving communities. They often step in to solve problems or provide services that the government or businesses might not fully address.  

There are so many different types of nonprofits, ranging from small local groups to large organizations like hospitals and universities. Most nonprofits focus on a unique cause, such as education, healthcare, social services, or the environment. This variety means there are many opportunities for people to work for a nonprofit and make a difference by creating public good, whether through direct service, advocacy, or community development. Nonprofits offer a chance for individuals to contribute to meaningful work that helps improve their local communities.  

By engaging with communities and encouraging civic involvement, nonprofits help foster a stronger, more engaged society. They promote volunteerism, advocacy, and local participation, ensuring that people have a voice and resources to improve their lives and communities.
