Irish <\/span>juni\u00ad<\/span>per, <\/span>yew <\/span>and <\/span>white lilac, <\/span>hawthorn, <\/span>lavender and <\/span>wisteria <\/span>have <\/span>been <\/span>planted, and <\/span>shamrocks, <\/span>cowslips, <\/span>and <\/span>Shannon <\/span>roses <\/span>form the <\/span>borders. <\/span>There are <\/span>beds <\/span>of <\/span>Killarney <\/span>roses, <\/span>and <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>\u201cLast <\/span>Rose <\/span>of <\/span>Sum\u00ad<\/span>mer\u201d <\/span>species. <\/span>Along a cinder <\/span>path <\/span>descending to <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden <\/span>are planted Irish blackthorn, <\/span>used <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>making <\/span>of <\/span>a shillelagh, <\/span>or <\/span>cudgel. <\/span>This <\/span>\u201cgreen\u00ad<\/span>est <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>park <\/span>gardens\u201d <\/span>as <\/span>it has proudly <\/span>been <\/span>called, <\/span>was <\/span>designed <\/span>by <\/span>Donald <\/span>Gray. <\/span>Thomas J. McMana\u00ad<\/span>mon <\/span>volunteered his <\/span>services as <\/span>supervising <\/span>con\u00ad<\/span>struction engineer.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAn <\/span>initial dedication <\/span>\u2018of <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden <\/span>took <\/span>place <\/span>on <\/span>the <\/span>afternoon <\/span>of <\/span>Sunday, <\/span>May ZSth, <\/span>1933, <\/span>the <\/span>154th anniversary <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>birth <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>celebrated <\/span>Irish poet, <\/span>Thomas <\/span>Moore. <\/span>The <\/span>Reverend Doctor <\/span>Edward <\/span>A. <\/span>Kirby <\/span>of <\/span>St. <\/span>Cecilia\u2019s <\/span>Parish Church de\u00ad<\/span>livered <\/span>the <\/span>principal address before an audience <\/span>of <\/span>2000. <\/span>Congressman <\/span>Martin <\/span>L. <\/span>Sweeney; as <\/span>master <\/span>of <\/span>ceremonies, <\/span>introduced <\/span>Cultural <\/span>Garden League <\/span>officers, <\/span>other <\/span>nationality <\/span>group <\/span>leaders, and specifically\u00a0<\/span>Mrs. <\/span>Mary <\/span>K. <\/span>Duffy, <\/span>tireless <\/span>Irish <\/span>group <\/span>leader; together <\/span>with <\/span>Miss <\/span>Mary Ellen Murphy, with the Garden\u2019s beginnings to its triumphant cul\u00admination. Ray T. Miller, Mayor of Cleveland, and William J. Corrigan also spoke, paying tribute to Ireland\u2018s cultural gifts to the world. Duffy. <\/span>\r\n\r\nThe <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden <\/span>was <\/span>officially <\/span>dedicated <\/span>on <\/span>October <\/span>29, <\/span>1939. Music was <\/span>by <\/span>the Parmadale <\/span>Band, <\/span>the <\/span>fife <\/span>and <\/span>drum <\/span>corps <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Sons <\/span>and <\/span>Daughters <\/span>of <\/span>Eire, <\/span>and <\/span>the <\/span>West <\/span>Side Irish-American <\/span>Club. <\/span>Under <\/span>banners <\/span>of <\/span>orange, white and <\/span>green, <\/span>the <\/span>Knights <\/span>of <\/span>Columbus <\/span>in <\/span>black <\/span>and <\/span>red <\/span>garb, <\/span>stood <\/span>at <\/span>attention. <\/span>The <\/span>Reverend <\/span>Father <\/span>Stephen <\/span>Driscoll, <\/span>assistant <\/span>pastor <\/span>of <\/span>St. <\/span>Thomas <\/span>Aquinas <\/span>Church, <\/span>blessed <\/span>the garden. <\/span>Common <\/span>Pleas <\/span>Judge <\/span>Frank <\/span>J. Merrick served <\/span>as <\/span>chairman. <\/span>Principal <\/span>speaker <\/span>was <\/span>Mayor Maurice <\/span>J. Tobin <\/span>of <\/span>Boston, <\/span>who <\/span>stressed <\/span>the <\/span>Irish contribution <\/span>to <\/span>America over <\/span>a <\/span>pe\u00ad<\/span>riod <\/span>of <\/span>three <\/span>centuries. Congressman <\/span>Martin <\/span>L. <\/span>Sweeney <\/span>praised <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Homeland, <\/span>and <\/span>Mary <\/span>K. <\/span>Duffy <\/span>also spoke. <\/span>Harold <\/span>H. <\/span>Burton, <\/span>May\u00ad<\/span>or <\/span>of <\/span>Cleveland, <\/span>formally <\/span>presented <\/span>the <\/span>garden <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Cultural <\/span>Garden <\/span>Association, <\/span>and <\/span>Mr. <\/span>John <\/span>J. O\u2019Malley, vice-president <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Association, <\/span>ac\u00ad<\/span>cepted <\/span>in <\/span>behalf <\/span>of <\/span>President James J. <\/span>Murray, <\/span>ab\u00ad<\/span>sent <\/span>because <\/span>of <\/span>illness. <\/span>A sad note <\/span>marking <\/span>this <\/span>otherwise <\/span>gala <\/span>occasion <\/span>was <\/span>a <\/span>prayer <\/span>offered <\/span>by <\/span>Msgr. John <\/span>R. <\/span>Hagan, <\/span>diocesan director <\/span>of <\/span>parochial <\/span>schools, <\/span>for <\/span>Thomas <\/span>J. <\/span>McManamon, <\/span>the <\/span>engineer <\/span>who <\/span>had <\/span>given <\/span>so <\/span>generously <\/span>of <\/span>his <\/span>services <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden, <\/span>and <\/span>whose <\/span>death <\/span>had <\/span>occurred <\/span>the <\/span>day <\/span>before <\/span>the <\/span>dedication. <\/span>\r\n\r\nAt <\/span>the <\/span>conclusion <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>dedication ceremonies, <\/span>James <\/span>J. <\/span>Murray, <\/span>association president, <\/span>ill <\/span>at <\/span>his <\/span>home, <\/span>was <\/span>presented <\/span>by <\/span>garden <\/span>officials with <\/span>a <\/span>gold <\/span>watch <\/span>in <\/span>appreciation <\/span>of <\/span>his <\/span>splendid <\/span>work <\/span>in <\/span>making <\/span>this <\/span>dream <\/span>of <\/span>the Irish <\/span>Garden <\/span>come <\/span>true.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAt <\/span>a <\/span>banquet in <\/span>Hotel <\/span>Hollenden that <\/span>evening, <\/span>Postmaster Michael <\/span>F. <\/span>O'Donnell <\/span>was <\/span>toastmaster, <\/span>and <\/span>Bishop James <\/span>A. <\/span>McFadden <\/span>and <\/span>Mayor <\/span>Tobin, of Boston, and Mayor Burton, of Cleveland, were speakers.<\/span>\r\n\r\nOn <\/span>Sunday, <\/span>May <\/span>11, <\/span>1952, <\/span>Mother\u2019s <\/span>Day, <\/span>in <\/span>a <\/span>simple <\/span>ceremony <\/span>at <\/span>the <\/span>Irish Cultural <\/span>Garden, <\/span>trib\u00ad<\/span>ute <\/span>was <\/span>paid <\/span>to <\/span>Ernest R. Ball, composer <\/span>of <\/span>many <\/span>Irish <\/span>ballads, <\/span>including \u201cMother Machree.\u201d Mrs. <\/span>E. <\/span>C. <\/span>Ingram <\/span>of <\/span>Lakeside, <\/span>Ohio, <\/span>daughter <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>com\u00ad<\/span>poser, <\/span>who was <\/span>born, <\/span>reared and <\/span>educated <\/span>in <\/span>Cleve\u00ad<\/span>land, <\/span>and who was <\/span>a <\/span>piano <\/span>teacher <\/span>here <\/span>during <\/span>the <\/span>early period <\/span>of <\/span>his musical career, <\/span>planted <\/span>a <\/span>mountain <\/span>laurel shrub <\/span>in <\/span>her <\/span>father\u2019s <\/span>memory. County Prose\u00ad<\/span>cutor Frank <\/span>T. <\/span>Cullitan, <\/span>and <\/span>Judge John <\/span>V. <\/span>Corri\u00ad<\/span>gan, <\/span>then <\/span>State <\/span>Representative, briefly reviewed <\/span>Ball\u2019s career, <\/span>terming him <\/span>as <\/span>much responsible <\/span>for <\/span>the <\/span>observance <\/span>of <\/span>Mother\u2019s <\/span>Day <\/span>as <\/span>any <\/span>other <\/span>single <\/span>American. <\/span>In <\/span>charge <\/span>of <\/span>this <\/span>ceremony was <\/span>Mrs. <\/span>Mary <\/span>K. <\/span>Duffy, <\/span>president <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Cultural <\/span>Garden <\/span>League.<\/span>\r\n\r\nOn <\/span>June <\/span>21, <\/span>1953, <\/span>the <\/span>Reverend Patrick Peyton, <\/span>famed leader <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Rosary Crusade, <\/span>planted an <\/span>Irish juniper <\/span>tree <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden. <\/span>Father <\/span>Peyton, <\/span>who <\/span>has <\/span>travelled <\/span>the <\/span>world over <\/span>preaching <\/span>that <\/span>\u201cfamilies <\/span>that <\/span>pray <\/span>together <\/span>stay <\/span>together,\u201d <\/span>recited <\/span>the <\/span>Rosary <\/span>and <\/span>delivered <\/span>a <\/span>short talk before <\/span>a <\/span>statue <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Blessed <\/span>Virgin, <\/span>placed <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>garden <\/span>for <\/span>the <\/span>occasion.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAn <\/span>interesting <\/span>annual <\/span>observance which <\/span>has <\/span>high\u00ad<\/span>lighted Irish <\/span>Garden <\/span>history <\/span>has <\/span>been <\/span>the <\/span>Barry <\/span>Day <\/span>celebration <\/span>held <\/span>on <\/span>a September Sunday <\/span>each <\/span>year <\/span>in <\/span>honor <\/span>of <\/span>Commodore <\/span>John <\/span>Barry. <\/span>Born <\/span>in <\/span>County <\/span>Wexford, <\/span>Ireland, <\/span>in <\/span>1745, <\/span>John <\/span>Barry <\/span>en\u00ad<\/span>thusiastically espoused <\/span>the <\/span>cause <\/span>of <\/span>American <\/span>inde\u00ad<\/span>pendence, <\/span>offering <\/span>his <\/span>services <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>Continental <\/span>Congress <\/span>and being <\/span>placed <\/span>in <\/span>command <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Brig <\/span>Lexington <\/span>with <\/span>which <\/span>he <\/span>successfully <\/span>engaged in <\/span>many <\/span>encounters. <\/span>By <\/span>reason <\/span>of <\/span>his <\/span>services <\/span>to <\/span>his <\/span>country <\/span>in <\/span>its early days, <\/span>he <\/span>became <\/span>known <\/span>as <\/span>the <\/span>\u201cFather <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>American Navy.\u201d <\/span>\r\n\r\nOfficers <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>United <\/span>States <\/span>Navy <\/span>have <\/span>been <\/span>principal <\/span>speakers <\/span>at <\/span>the <\/span>Barry <\/span>Day <\/span>celebrations <\/span>through <\/span>the <\/span>years, <\/span>and <\/span>include <\/span>Lieutenant <\/span>R. <\/span>J. Mull<\/span>arkey, <\/span>Commander <\/span>E. <\/span>W. <\/span>McKinley, Commander <\/span>John <\/span>C. <\/span>Grogan, <\/span>Lieutenant Commander <\/span>James M. <\/span>Brogan, <\/span>Admiral <\/span>Daniel <\/span>V. <\/span>Gallery, Captain <\/span>Thomas <\/span>B. <\/span>Dugan, <\/span>Admiral <\/span>Daniel <\/span>V. <\/span>Gallery, <\/span>Jr., <\/span>and <\/span>Commander <\/span>John Thomas <\/span>McLaughlin.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn 1953, Mayor Thomas <\/span>A. <\/span>Burke designated <\/span>by <\/span>city <\/span>proclamation, <\/span>September <\/span>13th <\/span>as Commodore <\/span>John <\/span>Barry Day. <\/span>On <\/span>that <\/span>day <\/span>the <\/span>program <\/span>included <\/span>the <\/span>posting <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Colors <\/span>by <\/span>the <\/span>United <\/span>States <\/span>Navy, <\/span>the <\/span>singing <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Star Spangled Banner <\/span>by <\/span>Jack <\/span>Nealings, and <\/span>Irish music <\/span>and <\/span>dances <\/span>by <\/span>Belle Con-<\/span>way, Patrick <\/span>A. Donovan, <\/span>Tom <\/span>McLaughlin, <\/span>Jimmy <\/span>Giblin, <\/span>and <\/span>Tommy <\/span>Byrne. <\/span>Nathaniel <\/span>R. <\/span>Howard, <\/span>editor <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Cleveland <\/span>News, spoke <\/span>on <\/span>his <\/span>recent <\/span>trip <\/span>to <\/span>Ireland, <\/span>and <\/span>presented <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden with <\/span>stones <\/span>he <\/span>brought from <\/span>the <\/span>home <\/span>of <\/span>Daniel <\/span>O\u2019Con\u00ad<\/span>nell, <\/span>known <\/span>as <\/span>\u201cthe great\u00a0<\/span>emancipator<\/span>of <\/span>Ireland.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_203\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"319\"]\"Irish Irish Garden Approach from Upper Boulevard[\/caption]\r\n\r\nOf <\/span>Derrynane, <\/span>in County <\/span>Kerry, <\/span>O\u2019Connell <\/span>won\u00a0<\/span>restoration<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of <\/span>Irish citizenship <\/span>rights from the <\/span>British <\/span>Parliament <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>1840\u2019s. <\/span>The <\/span>stones <\/span>were <\/span>accepted <\/span>gratefully <\/span>as <\/span>a permanent addition <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>Irish Garden <\/span>by <\/span>Mrs. <\/span>Mary <\/span>K. Duffy, <\/span>president <\/span>of <\/span>the Irish Cultural Garden <\/span>League. <\/span>Principal <\/span>speaker <\/span>was <\/span>Lieutenant <\/span>Commander <\/span>R. <\/span>G. <\/span>O'Maley, <\/span>Naval <\/span>Air Station, Akron, Ohio. <\/span>The <\/span>benediction <\/span>was <\/span>by <\/span>the <\/span>Reverend <\/span>Peter <\/span>F. <\/span>McCafferty, Assistant <\/span>Pastor <\/span>of <\/span>St. <\/span>Joseph\u2018s Church.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cCommodore <\/span>Barry\u2019s <\/span>example <\/span>of <\/span>selfless <\/span>devo\u00ad<\/span>tion <\/span>to <\/span>duty <\/span>has <\/span>been, and continues to <\/span>be, <\/span>an <\/span>in\u00ad<\/span>spiration <\/span>to <\/span>sailors <\/span>of <\/span>every <\/span>generation,\u201d Command\u00ad<\/span>er <\/span>O'Maley <\/span>said, <\/span>in <\/span>part. <\/span>\u201cHe <\/span>lives <\/span>today when\u00ad<\/span>ever Americans <\/span>are <\/span>risking and <\/span>giving their <\/span>lives <\/span>in <\/span>conflict <\/span>with <\/span>the <\/span>enemies <\/span>of <\/span>freedom <\/span>. <\/span>. . <\/span>There <\/span>is <\/span>a <\/span>fine <\/span>symbolism <\/span>to <\/span>be found <\/span>in <\/span>the fact that <\/span>the <\/span>last <\/span>command <\/span>of <\/span>Commodore <\/span>Barry <\/span>was <\/span>the Frigate <\/span>the United States. <\/span>When <\/span>the <\/span>keel, <\/span>frames and <\/span>deck <\/span>of <\/span>his <\/span>last ship rotted <\/span>away, <\/span>long after <\/span>his <\/span>flag <\/span>of <\/span>command <\/span>was <\/span>hauled <\/span>down, <\/span>he <\/span>still <\/span>continued <\/span>to <\/span>live <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>keel <\/span>and <\/span>framework <\/span>of <\/span>his <\/span>larger <\/span>loyalty-<\/span>-the <\/span>United <\/span>States <\/span>of <\/span>America.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\nMunicipal <\/span>Judge <\/span>Lillian <\/span>M. <\/span>Westropp <\/span>was gen\u00ad<\/span>eral chairman <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>1953 <\/span>program, Judge John <\/span>V. <\/span>Corrigan <\/span>was <\/span>master <\/span>of <\/span>ceremonies, <\/span>and <\/span>Mrs. Mary <\/span>K. <\/span>Duffy, <\/span>president <\/span>of <\/span>the Iris<\/span>h <\/span>Cultural Garden <\/span>League, <\/span>was <\/span>in <\/span>charge <\/span>of arra<\/span>ngements. <\/span>Other League officials assisting included Miss Mary Ellen Murphy, secretary; Mrs. Jack Kelly, Mrs. Frank Damon, treasurer; Mrs. Anna Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Lynch (Mr. Lynch serving as Barry Day chair\u00adman), Mrs. P. J. Maloney, Mrs. Thomas Sullivan, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Giblin, Mrs. Lou Schwartzen\u00adberg, Mrs. Patrick O\u2019Brien, and Judge Frank Mer\u00adrick. The West Side Irish-American Club has also always given generous \u2018assistance. The Barry Day events are jointly sponsored by the Commodore Barry Club of Cleveland, and the Irish Cultural Garden League. <\/span>\r\n\r\nThe <\/span>history <\/span>of <\/span>Commodore <\/span>John <\/span>Barry, <\/span>adopted <\/span>patron <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Cultural Garden, <\/span>is <\/span>the <\/span>story <\/span>of <\/span>many <\/span>Irish <\/span>leaders <\/span>who <\/span>emigrated <\/span>to <\/span>America <\/span>and <\/span>so <\/span>loved <\/span>and fought <\/span>so <\/span>valiantly <\/span>for <\/span>this <\/span>land. <\/span>In <\/span>the words <\/span>of <\/span>William <\/span>Bell <\/span>Clark, <\/span>\u201cNo <\/span>American <\/span>naval <\/span>hero <\/span>has <\/span>deserved <\/span>of <\/span>posterity <\/span>greater appre\u00ad<\/span>ciation. <\/span>of <\/span>his <\/span>career <\/span>and <\/span>received <\/span>less <\/span>than <\/span>John <\/span>Barry:\u201d Barry <\/span>was <\/span>the first captain <\/span>of <\/span>the first <\/span>warship <\/span>named <\/span>after <\/span>the <\/span>first land battle <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Revolution. <\/span>He <\/span>was <\/span>the first <\/span>to <\/span>capture <\/span>a British <\/span>warship and <\/span>was <\/span>named <\/span>the first <\/span>commissioned <\/span>officer <\/span>of <\/span>the United <\/span>States Navy. <\/span>\r\n\r\nIn <\/span>keeping with <\/span>the <\/span>spirit <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Barry Day cele\u00ad<\/span>brations <\/span>and <\/span>the <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden are these <\/span>words <\/span>of <\/span>Judge John <\/span>V. <\/span>Corrigan:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cThe <\/span>one <\/span>principal fact that has <\/span>been <\/span>emphasized <\/span>here <\/span>is <\/span>the debt <\/span>which we owe <\/span>all <\/span>our <\/span>American <\/span>heroes-past, <\/span>present, and <\/span>future-the <\/span>men <\/span>who <\/span>have <\/span>fought <\/span>and <\/span>fight <\/span>to preserve <\/span>our <\/span>freedom and <\/span>our <\/span>independence. <\/span>The <\/span>Lafayettes, <\/span>the <\/span>Pulaskis, <\/span>the <\/span>Von <\/span>Steubens, <\/span>the <\/span>Stefaniks, <\/span>and the <\/span>Barrys, <\/span>and <\/span>all <\/span>the <\/span>rest have <\/span>enabled <\/span>us <\/span>to prove <\/span>to <\/span>the world <\/span>that all <\/span>sons <\/span>of <\/span>men <\/span>are children <\/span>of <\/span>God <\/span>before <\/span>Whom all <\/span>men <\/span>kneel <\/span>as <\/span>equals. <\/span>In <\/span>honoring <\/span>Com\u00ad<\/span>modore <\/span>Barry we <\/span>do, <\/span>in <\/span>fact, honor all great <\/span>Amer\u00ad<\/span>icans. <\/span>And <\/span>on <\/span>this <\/span>memorial <\/span>day <\/span>we <\/span>all <\/span>can join <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>prayer <\/span>of <\/span>the eloquent poet:<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cAnd Thou, <\/span>Oh <\/span>God, <\/span>of <\/span>Whom <\/span>we hold <\/span>our <\/span>country <\/span>and <\/span>our <\/span>freedom <\/span>fair, <\/span>\r\n\r\nWithin <\/span>Thy tender <\/span>love <\/span>enfold this <\/span>Land; for all <\/span>Thy <\/span>people <\/span>care.<\/span>\r\n\r\nUplift <\/span>our <\/span>hearts <\/span>above <\/span>our <\/span>fortunes high, <\/span>Let <\/span>not <\/span>the <\/span>good we <\/span>have <\/span>make <\/span>us <\/span>forget <\/span>\r\n\r\nThe <\/span>better <\/span>things that <\/span>in Thy <\/span>heavens <\/span>lie!<\/span>\r\n\r\nKeep still, <\/span>amid <\/span>the <\/span>fever <\/span>and <\/span>the <\/span>fret <\/span>of <\/span>all <\/span>this <\/span>eager life <\/span>our <\/span>thought <\/span>on <\/span>Thee,<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe <\/span>hope, the strength, <\/span>the <\/span>God <\/span>of <\/span>all <\/span>the free.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe <\/span>Irish <\/span>Garden <\/span>was, <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>words <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Rev\u00ad<\/span>erend <\/span>Doctor <\/span>Edward A. Kirby, dedicated <\/span>\u201cto <\/span>the <\/span>glory <\/span>of <\/span>nature <\/span>and <\/span>of <\/span>God, <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>good <\/span>of <\/span>our <\/span>fellow-citizens, and <\/span>as <\/span>a memorial to <\/span>the Land <\/span>of <\/span>Flowers--Ireland.\u201d <\/span>\r\n\r\nSet <\/span>like <\/span>an <\/span>emerald <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>Cultural Gardens <\/span>chain <\/span>of <\/span>gems, <\/span>this <\/span>exquisite <\/span>little <\/span>garden <\/span>is <\/span>a symbol <\/span>of <\/span>universal <\/span>hope, <\/span>that <\/span>is typical <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>courageous and <\/span>cheerful <\/span>people <\/span>who <\/span>gave <\/span>it.<\/span>","rendered":"

The Irish Cultural Garden is located at the Su\u00adperior Avenue entrance of the .Rockefeller Park Gar\u00adden chain, and was dedicated in 1939. Here the Celtic cross is developed in turf, slate, and sand\u00adstone walks, and sedum-filled lunettes. Irish juni\u00adper, yew and white lilac, hawthorn, lavender and wisteria have been planted, and shamrocks, cowslips, and Shannon roses form the borders. There are beds of Killarney roses, and of the \u201cLast Rose of Sum\u00admer\u201d species. Along a cinder path descending to the Irish Garden are planted Irish blackthorn, used in the making of a shillelagh, or cudgel. This \u201cgreen\u00adest of the park gardens\u201d as it has proudly been called, was designed by Donald Gray. Thomas J. McMana\u00admon volunteered his services as supervising con\u00adstruction engineer.<\/p>\n

An initial dedication \u2018of the Irish Garden took place on the afternoon of Sunday, May ZSth, 1933, the 154th anniversary of the birth of the celebrated Irish poet, Thomas Moore. The Reverend Doctor Edward A. Kirby of St. Cecilia\u2019s Parish Church de\u00adlivered the principal address before an audience of 2000. Congressman Martin L. Sweeney; as master of ceremonies, introduced Cultural Garden League officers, other nationality group leaders, and specifically\u00a0Mrs. Mary K. Duffy, tireless Irish group leader; together with Miss Mary Ellen Murphy, with the Garden\u2019s beginnings to its triumphant cul\u00admination. Ray T. Miller, Mayor of Cleveland, and William J. Corrigan also spoke, paying tribute to Ireland\u2018s cultural gifts to the world. Irish music was presented by the Parmadale Band and the Joyce Kilmer Gaelic-American Club Quartet.<\/p>\n

This charming garden was realized through efforts of the Irish Cultural Garden\u00a0Association\u00a0which, under the presidency of James J. Murray, in January of 1939 raised the initial $1500 to be aug\u00admented by Federal and City funds to a\u00a0requisite\u00a0$45,000. The Irish Garden was officially dedicated on October 29, 1939. Music was by the Parmadale Band, the fife and drum corps of the Sons and Daughters of Eire, and the West Side Irish-American Club. Under banners of orange, white and green, the Knights of Columbus in black and red garb, stood at attention. The Reverend Father Stephen Driscoll, assistant pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, blessed the garden. Common Pleas Judge Frank J. Merrick served as chairman. Principal speaker was Mayor Maurice J. Tobin of Boston, who stressed the Irish contribution to America over a pe\u00adriod of three centuries. Congressman Martin L. Sweeney praised the Irish of the Homeland, and Mary K. Duffy also spoke. Harold H. Burton, May\u00ador of Cleveland, formally presented the garden to the Irish Cultural Garden Association, and Mr. John J. O\u2019Malley, vice-president of the Association, ac\u00adcepted in behalf of President James J. Murray, ab\u00adsent because of illness. A sad note marking this otherwise gala occasion was a prayer offered by Msgr. John R. Hagan, diocesan director of parochial schools, for Thomas J. McManamon, the engineer who had given so generously of his services to the Irish Garden, and whose death had occurred the day before the dedication. <\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the dedication ceremonies, James J. Murray, association president, ill at his home, was presented by garden officials with a gold watch in appreciation of his splendid work in making this dream of the Irish Garden come true.<\/p>\n

At a banquet in Hotel Hollenden that evening, Postmaster Michael F. O’Donnell was toastmaster, and Bishop James A. McFadden and Mayor Tobin, of Boston, and Mayor Burton, of Cleveland, were speakers.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, May 11, 1952, Mother\u2019s Day, in a simple ceremony at the Irish Cultural Garden, trib\u00adute was paid to Ernest R. Ball, composer of many Irish ballads, including \u201cMother Machree.\u201d Mrs. E. C. Ingram of Lakeside, Ohio, daughter of the com\u00adposer, who was born, reared and educated in Cleve\u00adland, and who was a piano teacher here during the early period of his musical career, planted a mountain laurel shrub in her father\u2019s memory. County Prose\u00adcutor Frank T. Cullitan, and Judge John V. Corri\u00adgan, then State Representative, briefly reviewed Ball\u2019s career, terming him as much responsible for the observance of Mother\u2019s Day as any other single American. In charge of this ceremony was Mrs. Mary K. Duffy, president of the Irish Cultural Garden League.<\/p>\n

On June 21, 1953, the Reverend Patrick Peyton, famed leader of the Rosary Crusade, planted an Irish juniper tree in the Irish Garden. Father Peyton, who has travelled the world over preaching that \u201cfamilies that pray together stay together,\u201d recited the Rosary and delivered a short talk before a statue of the Blessed Virgin, placed in the garden for the occasion.<\/p>\n

An interesting annual observance which has high\u00adlighted Irish Garden history has been the Barry Day celebration held on a September Sunday each year in honor of Commodore John Barry. Born in County Wexford, Ireland, in 1745, John Barry en\u00adthusiastically espoused the cause of American inde\u00adpendence, offering his services to the Continental Congress and being placed in command of the Brig Lexington with which he successfully engaged in many encounters. By reason of his services to his country in its early days, he became known as the \u201cFather of the American Navy.\u201d <\/p>\n

Officers of the United States Navy have been principal speakers at the Barry Day celebrations through the years, and include Lieutenant R. J. Mullarkey, Commander E. W. McKinley, Commander John C. Grogan, Lieutenant Commander James M. Brogan, Admiral Daniel V. Gallery, Captain Thomas B. Dugan, Admiral Daniel V. Gallery, Jr., and Commander John Thomas McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

In 1953, Mayor Thomas A. Burke designated by city proclamation, September 13th as Commodore John Barry Day. On that day the program included the posting of the Colors by the United States Navy, the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Jack Nealings, and Irish music and dances by Belle Con-way, Patrick A. Donovan, Tom McLaughlin, Jimmy Giblin, and Tommy Byrne. Nathaniel R. Howard, editor of the Cleveland News, spoke on his recent trip to Ireland, and presented the Irish Garden with stones he brought from the home of Daniel O\u2019Con\u00adnell, known as \u201cthe great\u00a0emancipatorof Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of Derrynane, in County Kerry, O\u2019Connell won\u00a0restoration\u00a0of Irish citizenship rights from the British Parliament in the 1840\u2019s. The stones were accepted gratefully as a permanent addition to the Irish Garden by Mrs. Mary K. Duffy, president of the Irish Cultural Garden League. Principal speaker was Lieutenant Commander R. G. O’Maley, Naval Air Station, Akron, Ohio. The benediction was by the Reverend Peter F. McCafferty, Assistant Pastor of St. Joseph\u2018s Church.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommodore Barry\u2019s example of selfless devo\u00adtion to duty has been, and continues to be, an in\u00adspiration to sailors of every generation,\u201d Command\u00ader O’Maley said, in part. \u201cHe lives today when\u00adever Americans are risking and giving their lives in conflict with the enemies of freedom . . . There is a fine symbolism to be found in the fact that the last command of Commodore Barry was the Frigate the United States. When the keel, frames and deck of his last ship rotted away, long after his flag of command was hauled down, he still continued to live in the keel and framework of his larger loyalty--the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Municipal Judge Lillian M. Westropp was gen\u00aderal chairman of the 1953 program, Judge John V. Corrigan was master of ceremonies, and Mrs. Mary K. Duffy, president of the Irish Cultural Garden League, was in charge of arrangements. Other League officials assisting included Miss Mary Ellen Murphy, secretary; Mrs. Jack Kelly, Mrs. Frank Damon, treasurer; Mrs. Anna Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Lynch (Mr. Lynch serving as Barry Day chair\u00adman), Mrs. P. J. Maloney, Mrs. Thomas Sullivan, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Giblin, Mrs. Lou Schwartzen\u00adberg, Mrs. Patrick O\u2019Brien, and Judge Frank Mer\u00adrick. The West Side Irish-American Club has also always given generous \u2018assistance. The Barry Day events are jointly sponsored by the Commodore Barry Club of Cleveland, and the Irish Cultural Garden League. <\/p>\n

The history of Commodore John Barry, adopted patron of the Irish Cultural Garden, is the story of many Irish leaders who emigrated to America and so loved and fought so valiantly for this land. In the words of William Bell Clark, \u201cNo American naval hero has deserved of posterity greater appre\u00adciation. of his career and received less than John Barry:\u201d Barry was the first captain of the first warship named after the first land battle of the Revolution. He was the first to capture a British warship and was named the first commissioned officer of the United States Navy. <\/p>\n

In keeping with the spirit of the Barry Day cele\u00adbrations and the Irish Garden are these words of Judge John V. Corrigan:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe one principal fact that has been emphasized here is the debt which we owe all our American heroes-past, present, and future-the men who have fought and fight to preserve our freedom and our independence. The Lafayettes, the Pulaskis, the Von Steubens, the Stefaniks, and the Barrys, and all the rest have enabled us to prove to the world that all sons of men are children of God before Whom all men kneel as equals. In honoring Com\u00admodore Barry we do, in fact, honor all great Amer\u00adicans. And on this memorial day we all can join in the prayer of the eloquent poet:<\/p>\n

The Irish Garden was, in the words of the Rev\u00aderend Doctor Edward A. Kirby, dedicated \u201cto the glory of nature and of God, to the good of our fellow-citizens, and as a memorial to the Land of Flowers–Ireland.\u201d <\/p>\n
