<\/span>science <\/span>have-reconstructed, <\/span>is <\/span>a fair gar\u00ad<\/span>den eastward in <\/span>Eden, <\/span>with <\/span>tranquil <\/span>rivers, <\/span>lofty <\/span>trees <\/span>\"pleasant <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>sight <\/span>and <\/span>good <\/span>for <\/span>food\", and <\/span>the <\/span>Voice <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Eternal in <\/span>the <\/span>cool <\/span>of <\/span>its <\/span>fading <\/span>day. <\/span>\r\n\r\nAn <\/span>underlying <\/span>love <\/span>of <\/span>harmony <\/span>and <\/span>peace is <\/span>in\u00ad<\/span>grained <\/span>in <\/span>man's\u00a0<\/span>persistent<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>consciousness <\/span>of <\/span>that <\/span>first <\/span>abode. <\/span>Before the ages <\/span>of <\/span>warfare <\/span>with nature, <\/span>be\u00ad<\/span>fore <\/span>the intertribal <\/span>and <\/span>racial <\/span>feuds <\/span>is <\/span>the <\/span>change\u00ad<\/span>less calm <\/span>of <\/span>Paradise.<\/span>\r\n\r\nTry she <\/span>may, <\/span>science <\/span>cannot obliterate <\/span>man's <\/span>recollection <\/span>of <\/span>his <\/span>earliest <\/span>childhood <\/span>home. <\/span>Science <\/span>spins <\/span>its <\/span>tale <\/span>of <\/span>ages <\/span>of <\/span>tribal <\/span>fury <\/span>and <\/span>rapacity <\/span>and <\/span>its <\/span>summing up <\/span>is the <\/span>asseveration <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>supremacy <\/span>of <\/span>the jungle law <\/span>of <\/span>survival <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>fittest. <\/span>\r\n\r\nBut <\/span>a higher <\/span>law <\/span>graven <\/span>upon <\/span>the heart <\/span>of <\/span>man <\/span>is <\/span>rooted <\/span>in <\/span>instincts <\/span>formed <\/span>in <\/span>his <\/span>earliest place\u00ad<\/span>ments. <\/span>Not <\/span>warfare <\/span>with <\/span>nature, nor <\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>fellow man<\/span>, <\/span>hut <\/span>an adjustment <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>world without, <\/span>to <\/span>his own <\/span>most <\/span>normal <\/span>dictates <\/span>of <\/span>orderliness <\/span>and <\/span>serv\u00ad<\/span>ice <\/span>and <\/span>harmony, <\/span>is the <\/span>eternal and <\/span>unquenchable <\/span>will <\/span>of <\/span>man. <\/span>In <\/span>this <\/span>direction <\/span>is the\u00a0<\/span>in effaceable<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>memory <\/span>of <\/span>Paradise. <\/span>Out <\/span>of <\/span>these <\/span>promptings <\/span>arise man's as\u00ad<\/span>pirations <\/span>to <\/span>culture, a culture linked forever <\/span>with <\/span>the <\/span>First <\/span>Garden <\/span>where <\/span>nature, <\/span>not <\/span>subdued <\/span>but <\/span>won in <\/span>tenderness <\/span>and <\/span>sympathy <\/span>supplied man's <\/span>every <\/span>need. <\/span>\r\n\r\nA noted commentator <\/span>once set <\/span>forth <\/span>the <\/span>belief <\/span>that <\/span>men mingle but <\/span>cultures show <\/span>no <\/span>social <\/span>or <\/span>gre\u00ad<\/span>garious leanings. <\/span>\r\n\r\nNot <\/span>outwardly perhaps, <\/span>but <\/span>there <\/span>is <\/span>that <\/span>within <\/span>every <\/span>noble culture <\/span>that <\/span>binds <\/span>it in <\/span>true <\/span>understand\u00ad<\/span>ing <\/span>to <\/span>its fellows, indicating a <\/span>common <\/span>cultural <\/span>memory <\/span>and <\/span>the <\/span>common <\/span>heritage <\/span>of <\/span>Eden. <\/span>\r\n\r\nTrue <\/span>cultures impose <\/span>no <\/span>barriers <\/span>of <\/span>race <\/span>or <\/span>creed. <\/span>In <\/span>fact, their influence <\/span>is toward mutual understand-<\/span>in <\/span>and <\/span>wider <\/span>sympathy.<\/span>\r\n\r\n C<\/span>leveland <\/span>offers <\/span>the <\/span>world a tangible <\/span>manifesta\u00ad<\/span>tion <\/span>of <\/span>this <\/span>truth. <\/span>Cosmopolitan <\/span>to <\/span>a degree <\/span>that <\/span>As <\/span>One <\/span>Out <\/span>of <\/span>Many <\/span>Foreword <\/span>few <\/span>cities <\/span>have <\/span>been <\/span>since <\/span>the <\/span>far <\/span>dawn <\/span>of <\/span>civiliza\u00ad<\/span>tion, Cleveland <\/span>possesses <\/span>a cultural institution <\/span>which-<\/span>exemplifies <\/span>the <\/span>oneness <\/span>of <\/span>purpose linking <\/span>great <\/span>cultures <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>world. <\/span>\r\n\r\nIn <\/span>Rockefeller Parkway, <\/span>along <\/span>the <\/span>steep hillsides, <\/span>between <\/span>the <\/span>upper <\/span>and lower <\/span>driveways <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>East <\/span>Boulevard, <\/span>cling the <\/span>Cleveland <\/span>Cultural <\/span>Gardens, <\/span>with <\/span>individual <\/span>units <\/span>or <\/span>links, each emblazoning <\/span>a <\/span>distinct message <\/span>of <\/span>cultural <\/span>aspiration; <\/span>each singing <\/span>a song <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>far <\/span>away <\/span>homeland <\/span>of <\/span>a people <\/span>that <\/span>is building <\/span>anew <\/span>and <\/span>in <\/span>that <\/span>process of <\/span>contributing <\/span>of <\/span>its <\/span>own <\/span>inner <\/span>cultural <\/span>and <\/span>spiritual wealth.<\/span>\r\n\r\n <\/span>Every <\/span>gem in <\/span>this <\/span>diadem tells not <\/span>only <\/span>its <\/span>own <\/span>loveliness, <\/span>but in <\/span>reflection <\/span>radiates <\/span>the <\/span>color <\/span>and <\/span>beauty <\/span>of <\/span>its <\/span>neighbor. <\/span>\r\n\r\nFor <\/span>well over <\/span>a quarter <\/span>of <\/span>a century, pioneers <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>Cultural <\/span>Garden <\/span>enterprise, and <\/span>those <\/span>of <\/span>later <\/span>years <\/span>who <\/span>have <\/span>taken <\/span>up <\/span>the <\/span>task, <\/span>have <\/span>met <\/span>monthly <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>office <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Mayor, <\/span>in <\/span>united <\/span>consideration <\/span>of <\/span>problems, <\/span>and <\/span>to <\/span>work <\/span>out plans <\/span>for <\/span>betterment <\/span>and <\/span>future <\/span>expansion. <\/span>\r\n\r\nMen <\/span>and <\/span>women <\/span>of <\/span>diversified <\/span>national and <\/span>reli\u00ad<\/span>gious <\/span>backgrounds joined <\/span>in this communal <\/span>effort, <\/span>manifesting true <\/span>devotion <\/span>to <\/span>an <\/span>effort <\/span>symbolizing\u00a0<\/span>their strength<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and purpose <\/span>of <\/span>American <\/span>democracy. <\/span>\r\n\r\nAs <\/span>\"One out <\/span>of <\/span>Many,\" they, <\/span>the <\/span>great <\/span>city <\/span>that <\/span>supported <\/span>the <\/span>project <\/span>from <\/span>its <\/span>first <\/span>inception <\/span>and the <\/span>National <\/span>Government <\/span>that <\/span>came <\/span>forward <\/span>in an hour <\/span>when <\/span>the <\/span>way <\/span>seemed darkest <\/span>and <\/span>carried <\/span>the <\/span>dream <\/span>to <\/span>fulfillment, <\/span>made <\/span>common cause <\/span>in this enter\u00ad<\/span>prise. <\/span>\r\n\r\nThe <\/span>teachings <\/span>of <\/span>Cleveland's Cultural <\/span>Garden <\/span>chain <\/span>are <\/span>aglow <\/span>with <\/span>the <\/span>spiritual purpose <\/span>that <\/span>un\u00ad<\/span>derlies <\/span>the <\/span>way <\/span>of <\/span>free <\/span>and <\/span>democratic people. <\/span>For <\/span>surely, <\/span>as <\/span>it was written <\/span>of <\/span>true <\/span>wisdom <\/span>thousands <\/span>of years <\/span>ago<\/span>: <\/span>\r\n\r\n\"Her <\/span>ways <\/span>are <\/span>ways <\/span>of <\/span>pleasantness <\/span>\r\n\r\nAnd <\/span>all <\/span>her <\/span>paths are <\/span>peace.\" <\/span>\r\n

Man’s earliest memory is not the cave, the dino\u00adsaur, the knotted club and the jungle. <\/p>\n

Far beyond the dim aeons of savagery, which the delvings of science have-reconstructed, is a fair gar\u00adden eastward in Eden, with tranquil rivers, lofty trees “pleasant to the sight and good for food”, and the Voice of the Eternal in the cool of its fading day. <\/p>\n

An underlying love of harmony and peace is in\u00adgrained in man’s\u00a0persistent\u00a0consciousness of that first abode. Before the ages of warfare with nature, be\u00adfore the intertribal and racial feuds is the change\u00adless calm of Paradise.<\/p>\n

Try she may, science cannot obliterate man’s recollection of his earliest childhood home. Science spins its tale of ages of tribal fury and rapacity and its summing up is the asseveration of the supremacy of the jungle law of survival of the fittest. <\/p>\n

But a higher law graven upon the heart of man is rooted in instincts formed in his earliest place\u00adments. Not warfare with nature, nor with\u00a0fellow man, hut an adjustment of the world without, to his own most normal dictates of orderliness and serv\u00adice and harmony, is the eternal and unquenchable will of man. In this direction is the\u00a0in effaceable\u00a0memory of Paradise. Out of these promptings arise man’s as\u00adpirations to culture, a culture linked forever with the First Garden where nature, not subdued but won in tenderness and sympathy supplied man’s every need. <\/p>\n

A noted commentator once set forth the belief that men mingle but cultures show no social or gre\u00adgarious leanings. <\/p>\n

Not outwardly perhaps, but there is that within every noble culture that binds it in true understand\u00ading to its fellows, indicating a common cultural memory and the common heritage of Eden. <\/p>\n

True cultures impose no barriers of race or creed. In fact, their influence is toward mutual understand-in and wider sympathy.<\/p>\n

Cleveland offers the world a tangible manifesta\u00adtion of this truth. Cosmopolitan to a degree that As One Out of Many Foreword few cities have been since the far dawn of civiliza\u00adtion, Cleveland possesses a cultural institution which-exemplifies the oneness of purpose linking great cultures of the world. <\/p>\n

In Rockefeller Parkway, along the steep hillsides, between the upper and lower driveways of the East Boulevard, cling the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, with individual units or links, each emblazoning a distinct message of cultural aspiration; each singing a song of the far away homeland of a people that is building anew and in that process of contributing of its own inner cultural and spiritual wealth.<\/p>\n

Every gem in this diadem tells not only its own loveliness, but in reflection radiates the color and beauty of its neighbor. <\/p>\n

For well over a quarter of a century, pioneers in the Cultural Garden enterprise, and those of later years who have taken up the task, have met monthly in the office of the Mayor, in united consideration of problems, and to work out plans for betterment and future expansion. <\/p>\n

Men and women of diversified national and reli\u00adgious backgrounds joined in this communal effort, manifesting true devotion to an effort symbolizing\u00a0their strength\u00a0and purpose of American democracy. <\/p>\n

As “One out of Many,” they, the great city that supported the project from its first inception and the National Government that came forward in an hour when the way seemed darkest and carried the dream to fulfillment, made common cause in this enter\u00adprise. <\/p>\n

The teachings of Cleveland’s Cultural Garden chain are aglow with the spiritual purpose that un\u00adderlies the way of free and democratic people. For surely, as it was written of true wisdom thousands of years ago: <\/p>\n

“Her ways are ways of pleasantness <\/p>\n

And all her paths are peace.” <\/p>\n
