Being able to translate<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>how we feel into opinions and ideas that we can share is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>an exceedingly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>important<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>life skill.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The shift<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>from egocentrism<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>during early adolescence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>developing empathy<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>perspective are a direct result<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>having a rudimentary<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>ability to process emotions.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Teaching emotional literacy has been<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>thoroughly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>researched and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is best<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>learned through<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>support from parental figures and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>when it is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>actively taught in schools.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>In previous generations,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>fiscal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>support has been the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>primary method of care<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and now in recent generations<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>emotional support has become more of a priority.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Due to this new prioritization,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>schools have incorporated programs across the country<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are designed to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>encourage children to express themselves.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Finding your own identity during adolescence is imperative to development and directly stems from emotional literacy.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>But what is emotional literacy?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>To answer this question a broader question needs to be posed first.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cWhat is Literacy?\u201d by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>James Paul Gee<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>provides an answer.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Gee explains<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>literacy as<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>discourses<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and identity kits.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(Gee<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>1)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cThink of a discourse as an \"identity kit\" which comes complete with the appropriate costume and instructions on how to act and talk<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>so as to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>take on a particular role that others will recognize.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(Gee<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>1)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>He<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>then goes further in depth<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to explain how these discourses and identity kits are acquired.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The two main methods for attaining an identity kit are learning and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>acquisition; learning is defined<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as \u201c\u2026conscious knowledge<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>gained through<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>teaching \u2026 involves explanation and analysis, that is, breaking down the thing to be learned into its analytic<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>parts.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(Gee<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>3)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Acquisition is defined as<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201c\u2026acquiring something subconsciously by exposure to models and a process of trial and error, without a process of formal teaching.\u201d (Gee 3)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The final aspect of Gee\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>theory of Literacy is when the identity kit was acquired.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The options<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>primary discourses:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>what you learn from family that comes naturally,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>secondary discourses:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the things we learn outside of our homes and families. (Gee<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>4-5)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Teaching emotional literacy<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is most beneficial<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>at an early age<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that way their transition away from egocentrism<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to becoming aware<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of other people and their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>perspective<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>smooth.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>However, it is just as important<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>acquire an emotional literacy identity kit through<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>acquisition<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>it is through<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>learning.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I would also argue that for a child to have<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>true understanding and to have the best possible<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>application of emotional literacy in their future, the identity kit should be both primary and secondary.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Having<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>positive role model in a child\u2019s life aids the foundation of emotional<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>competency;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>this<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>would mean that the child would have<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>attained the identity kit<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>through acquisition as a primary discourse. However, studies have shown that while<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>support from home is one of the most important things in a child\u2019s life, being taught the same emotional skills from a school program is comparable.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>When<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>both of these<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>experiences are present in a child\u2019s life, they are best prepared<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to process big emotions<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that will<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>prevent harmful behavior in the future due to trauma.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>When a child learns from an early age how to process how they feel, they<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are able to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>further express themselves<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and handle tough situations in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I am a preschool music teacher and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>very specifically<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>teach<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the children<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>about their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>emotions.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I make it a point to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>not only ask but to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>help<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and teach<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>them<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>express<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>how they feel.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>My work does not have any sort of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>program designed to help the children with emotional literacy and expressing themselves. Due to this, I have taken it upon myself to best prepare my students<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>making sure they feel heard and worthy. From second to fifth grade,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>we began every<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>day by saying<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the seven<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>healthy habits<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and doing the hand motions with them.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I believe that the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>repetition<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in the classroom was a great catalyst<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>me wanting to be a therapist.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This is also why I stress creating a positive learning environment<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for my own students. without a process of formal teaching.\u201d (Gee 3)<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The final aspect of Gee\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">theory of Literacy is when the identity kit was acquired.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The options<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">primary discourses:<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">what you learn from family that comes naturally,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">secondary discourses:<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the things we learn outside of our homes and families. (Gee<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">4-5)<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Teaching emotional literacy<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is most beneficial<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">at an early age<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that way their transition away from egocentrism<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to becoming aware<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of other people and their<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">perspective<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">smooth.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">However, it is just as important<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">acquire an emotional literacy identity kit through<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">acquisition<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">it is through<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">learning.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I would also argue that for a child to have<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">true understanding and to have the best possible<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">application of emotional literacy in their future, the identity kit should be both primary and secondary.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Having<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">positive role model in a child\u2019s life aids the foundation of emotional<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">competency;<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">this<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">would mean that the child would have<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">attained the identity kit<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">through acquisition as a primary discourse. However, studies have shown that while<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">support from home is one of the most important things in a child\u2019s life, being taught the same emotional skills from a school program is comparable.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">When<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">both of these<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">experiences are present in a child\u2019s life, they are best prepared<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to process big emotions<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that will<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">prevent harmful behavior in the future due to trauma.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">When a child learns from an early age how to process how they feel, they<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are able to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">further express themselves<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and handle tough situations in the future.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I am a preschool music teacher and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">very specifically<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">teach<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the children<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">about their<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">emotions.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I make it a point to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">not only ask but to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">help<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and teach<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">them<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">express<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">how they feel.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">My work does not have any sort of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">program designed to help the children with emotional literacy and expressing themselves. Due to this, I have taken it upon myself to best prepare my students<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">by<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">making sure they feel heard and worthy. I do this through<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">my<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">music<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">classes<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">because art and music are a wonderful way of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">self-expression<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a catalyst<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for developing<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">your own identity.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Though<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">music<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">can assist emotional growth in children,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the first step is incorporating<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">school programs and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">making<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">access to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">school counselors<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">readily available.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201cPromoting<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Social and Emotional<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Competencies in Elementary School\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">by<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Stephanie M. Jones, Sophie P. Barnes, Rebecca Bailey, and Emily J. Doolittle<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is about SEL (social and emotional learning)<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">into elementary schools<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are extremely beneficial for children.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(Stephanie M.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">et. al.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">49)<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This creates a better learning environment that is better tailored<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">learning experience and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">more class=\"normaltextrun\">55)<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The results of this study showed<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the program<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">SecondStep<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">was the best<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for schools because it scored well in<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the categories. Children were<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">found to be more mindful,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">use the emotional literacy skills they had learned,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">better life satisfaction, and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a positive effect on managing emotions.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(Stephanie M. et. al.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">60)<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This was the best program of the 11 because<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of the repetition in the classrooms and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the evaluation of the students.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">When I was in elementary school,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">SecondStep<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">was a program that I was involved in. From second to fifth grade,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">we began every<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">day by saying<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the seven<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">healthy habits<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and doing the hand motions with them.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I believe that the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">repetition<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">in the classroom was a great catalyst<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">me wanting to be a therapist.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This is also why I stress creating a positive learning environment<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for my own students. Figuring out who you are, especially as a child, is no easy task, but<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the process becomes much easier when the child can process their emotions well. Identity comes from your opinions and how you feel.
