For my research essay,<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>will be<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>taking a look<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>analyzing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>an online<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>community<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>where writing,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reading<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and communication take place.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>The online<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>community<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>that has gained<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>my interest<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>for<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>this<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>research<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>essay is the reddit community,<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>r\/wallstreetbets.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>community<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has gained a massive amount<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>of attention<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>recently with the rise in GameStop and AMC stock.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>This rise in stock and investments was organized<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>by<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>the members of r\/wallstreetbets.<\/span><\/span>\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span>With the large<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>amount<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>people<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>investing in these stocks and it being<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>organized<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>on r\/wallstreetbets, controversy was soon to come. I think it will be<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>interesting<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>to look at what they people of the reddit were discussing during this time and how the outside world reacted.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Hearing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>firsthand experiences<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>from the members of the reddit<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>community will offer a good insight<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>into<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>the communication that takes place.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Also, looking at other stock market related reddit communities and comparing them to<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>would make for a good discussion.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

I will start the essay with some background information on the past recent events of the mass investing in GameStop and other dying companies.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Then I will bring up how it relates to the reddit community r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and what role<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the community<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>played. Giving some basic background on the subreddit and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>then<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>how it<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>overall<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>relates to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reading,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>writing,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>communication. Also,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mentioning<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>how<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the communication<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>done on the subreddit has<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a significant impact<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>on our economy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fo<\/span>r<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>next<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>section,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the focus will be shifted<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>into giving some background on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>what reddit is and explaining some<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>general<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>terms<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>used on reddit<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that might come up in the essay.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I will be using and paraphrasing from<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\"Ask me anything: what is Reddit?\"<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>by Katie Elson Anderson.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This academic article<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>provided<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>good background information on how reddit started and was able to explain a good understanding of reddit. Some<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>aspects of reddit<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I want to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>explain<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in this section are what is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the voting system, what are communities<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and users,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and the terms that go along with these.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>With thus<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>article and my writing, I hope to answer the research question of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cHow is reading, writing, and communicating done on Reddit?\u201d.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Now after giving some background<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and explanation of Reddit and the commonly used terms on the site, I want to focus<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>specifically on r\/wallstreetbets.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Now<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>taking<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>look<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at the commonly used terms and everything about their community.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I want to discuss what \u201cgoing to the moon\u201d and \u201crocket\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and other terms mean.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Going over what a typical post can look like and what are the tops posts are on the page.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I plan to use the academic article<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\"WallStreetBets: Positions or Ban.\" by Christian Boylston because it goes through an entire run through of the subreddit.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Also,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>its<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>especially helpful because it includes interviews with<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>frequent<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>members of the subreddit<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>their<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>individual<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>stories. Giving me an option to answer multiple of my research questions, specifically \u201cWhat individual experiences have been shared r\/wallstreetbets\u201d.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Another aspect is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the communication<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>linked with the community and how it\u2019s done. I plan to use Ian Sherr\u2019s article posted on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>CNET<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span>titled<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\"Reddit's<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>WallStreetBets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Had a Dramatic Wednesday Evening.\"<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Which features information on the subreddits discord server where I plan to talk about how part of the subreddits communication is done through<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Discord<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span>which is a text and audio messaging platform.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Then I will be<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>taking a look<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at how r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>differs from other stock related subreddits. Specifically, how a the more \u201cprofessional\u201d subreddit such as r\/stocks differs from a more humorous but still serious, r\/wallstreetbets. I want to analyze the different weekly top posts from each subreddit to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>compare the two. Draw attention to how a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>similar<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>topic can be discussed and communicated<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>through different ways.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>One of the main differences is how r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>more involved with memes<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>r\/stocks is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>more information based. Doing this will help answer the possible research question of \u201cHow does r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>differ from other subreddits focused on the stock market?\u201d.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>A good academic article to use for this section would be<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cModelling Stock Market Manipulation in Online Forums.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>by David Nam. This academic article provided information on different stock related subreddits which will be very beneficial for the comparisons to r\/wallstreetbets.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Moving on, I will shift the focus onto<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>effect r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>on the economy. I want to explain how the communication done on the subreddit has importance to the outside world.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Specifically, with the subreddits recent rise in popularity with its mainstream exposure due to the mass investing into GameStop stock covered by many news outlets.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I will try an explain the situation, with its backstory and how r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was at the center of it.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>An important<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>academic article for this section that I plan to use is \u201cGameStop Capitalism. Wall Street vs. The Reddit Rally (Part I).\u201d by Tim Di Muzio. This article has a lot of useful information for explaining<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the effect the subreddit has. Especially, with<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>showing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>data of the effect it had on GameStop and explanations of how it affected hedge funds. Also, the article shares a personal experience posted on the subreddit of how the subreddit has positively affected his life.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Possible research questions that could be answered from this section is \u201cHow were hedge funds exactly affected by the recent events of r\/wallstreetbets?\u201d and \u201cHow was r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>looked at before and after the recent events with the GameStop stock?\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Continuing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>off of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the last section that focused on the effect r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has on the economy, I will be shifting onto the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>effect<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has on the public. More specifically, the publics\u2019 thoughts<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and reactions<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>during the week of its largely increased popularity with the GameStop event.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>main focus<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of this section will be answering the research question of \u201cWhat are the outside\/general public\u2019s thoughts on r\/wallstreetbets?\u201d.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I want to include some tweets and mention other social media posts that that will offer a substantial look at how the general people reacted. A good article for this would<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>be Steven<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Asarch\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>article posted on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Insider<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span>titled \u201cReddit's<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>WallStreetBets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Is Facing a Culture Divide as New Users Flood the Forum.\". This article puts focus on the more humorous aspect of it all, which will be helpful with capturing the general public\u2019s reaction.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>On<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>social media it was a huge topic and I plan to cover how it reacted through memes, skits, and informational posts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Then<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in a new section<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I plan to discuss what the community r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>looks like now after the recent events and popularity.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This will offer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a fresh look<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at how the subreddit functions on a regular basis. I will<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mention<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>specific posts from r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>as a source and discuss the relevance behind them. This will be creating a good comparison between how the subreddit was before, during, and after its mainstream popularity in the past weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

To wrap up this<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>prospectus<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>essay,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I first want to answer the research question of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cWhat academic fields can\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>be associated with?\u201d. The main academic fields that<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are related to my topic<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are those related to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mathematics with<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>economic<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>analysis, financial analysis, and business studies<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>being the most prominent.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Most of the academic articles are<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>written by people who are stock and financial analyzers. Also, with the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>involvement<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of money and stocks<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>comes complex numbers with math and graphs behind them.Finally, I want to move on to finishing the conclusion<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of my research essay<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>where I want to recap the main points of the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>essay.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I plan to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>write about<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>how I believe that r\/wallstreetbets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>will still have<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>an influence<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in the future.
