With the increasing severity of the 2020 pandemic everyone's lives have been turned upside down.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>COVID-19 has caused stores, restaurants, and schools to close indefinitely due to cases around the country continuing to fluctuate. Although businesses and people have been affected by this demanding issue, the world of education has been critically impacted. While the pandemic has quickly escalated, so has the idea of remote learning.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>transition<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to remote learning due to COVID-19<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is intellectually harmful for the education of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>elementary<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>age children.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Many people can arguably agree that online learning is not suitable for young children and is not a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>fitting<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>environment for children\u2019s minds to be<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>stimulated and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>grow.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>In James Gee\u2019s article, \u201cWhat is Literacy?\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>he<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>discusses what he calls identity kits or discourses.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>A discourse is any situation where reading or speaking is involved<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and can also involve your nationality, career, gender, and hobbies. He continues by explaining what primary and secondary discourses are. A primary discourse is how you interact with people, places, or things familiar to you<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>so,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for example how you act at home would be<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>considered your primary discourse<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(18). A secondary discourse is how you<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>interact<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>with people, places, and things that are not familiar to you, like outside of your home for instance<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(18).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This relates to the new world of education that is remote learning because once school was seen as a child\u2019s secondary discourse, but quickly intertwined with their primary discourse at home.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>abrupt<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>transition<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>could be jarring for some children and may have harmful effects on today\u2019s youth.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The first article to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>examine this issue is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Tarnell D. Hobbs\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and Lee Hawkins\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cThe<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Results are in for Remote Learning: It Didn\u2019t Work\u201d. This article discusses the very issue with remote learning, it is simply not effective<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and the issues surrounding it began to appear almost immediately. Some students were without<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>devices or internet access, teachers were not equipped to teach remotely, or students<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>just wouldn\u2019t attend their online courses.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The superintendent of the Los Angeles School District, Austin Beutner, says<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cWe all know there is no substitute for learning in a school<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>setting, and many students are struggling and falling far behind where they should be\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(1).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Many children are experiencing a large learning gap now that remote learning is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>established, some learning gaps may not<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>be<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>recoverable especially<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for young children.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>According to prior research, \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>students nationwide will return to school in the fall with roughly 70% of learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year, and less than 50% in math, according to projections by NWEA\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(2).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Hobbs and Hawkins briefly discuss the common misconception that because this generation is \u201ctech savvy\u201d (2) that they will automatically prosper in this new world of education, but that is not the case. \u201cBeing a digital consumer and a digital learner are two different things,\u201d Janella Hinds, a Brooklyn Public Service High School teacher, says. There is a large difference between what students do on their devices for fun and how they use their devices to learn.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The correlation between the two is simply nonexistent.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Between birth to 5 years old are the most crucial moments for child development. During this time period children<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>have the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>opportunity to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>grow and develop neurologically, emotionally, socially, and physically.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>As young children, they are unable to learn through books and quizzes, instead they learn through play and meaningful social interactions. Most children, if not all, go<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>through<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>these<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>vital phases of development at school. Here, students have the chance to interact with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>peers to create and strengthen those four areas<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of development. Without this predominant foundation children may be permanently<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>suppressed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>during future development. For these very reasons in person schooling,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>particularly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>elementary in person learning is important.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This importance is discussed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Susan P. Walker<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and others<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>article, \u201cInequality in early childhood: risk and protective factors for early child development\u201d.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The foundation of brain development is created early in life through meaningful interactions and influenced genetically, biologically,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>an<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>psychosocially (2).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Learning opportunities that facilitate early cognitive development include caregiver activities and materials that promote age-appropriate language and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>problem solving<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>skills<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(6). These<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>type<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of helpful learning opportunities are not supported by remote learning<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>walker<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>says. Remote learning simply lacks a multitude of early<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>leaning<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>opportunities and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>neccesary<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>caregiver-child interactions<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that then<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>contributes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>many<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of the children falling behind since remote learning was<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>introduced.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>With children at home on a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>twenty-four hour<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>basis<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>this<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>leaves an open door for parents to participate in their child\u2019s education more than ever before.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Keeping this in mind,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Walker discusses how remote learning and the presence of parents involved in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>their learning<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>can be<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>helpful.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Considering that positive emotionality, sensitivity, and attentiveness towards the child can nourish their cognitive development, the presence of parents in their child\u2019s education can help them prosper if anything<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(6). Furthermore,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Walker<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>analyzed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>many studies done in China, India, South Africa, and Bangladesh that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>had shown<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>interventions<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>between mother and child resulted in stimulated cognitive development and overall a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>positive<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>foundation for the child to stive in (6-7)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The final two articles that discuss the impact of remote learning on our youth are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Abby R.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Masonbrink\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and Emily Hurley\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cAdvocating for Children During the Covid-19 School Closure\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Datonye<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Briggs\u2019 \u201cCovid-19: The Effect of Lockdown on Children\u2019s Remote Learning Experience\u201d. These two articles<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>touch on a hidden factor of remote learning that people tend to pay no mind to, the impact on the less fortunate youth.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Masonbrink<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>opens by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>stating, \u201cthe impact of COVID-19 unfolds, pandemic-related<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>trauma<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and economic instability will disproportionately impact children in poverty, who most heavily rely on school-based services for nutritional, physical, and mental health needs\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(1).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201c... nutrition programs that serve over 35 million children living in poverty daily\u201d (2).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>She continues to focus on the fact that sometimes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>a school<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>lunch may be the only source of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>food<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>or the only meal a child has every day. In addition to the wellbeing of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>children in poverty, many questions may arise about technology in order to do remote learning. For these very reasons in person schooling,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">particularly<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">elementary in person learning is important.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This importance is discussed<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">by<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Susan P. These<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">type<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of helpful learning opportunities are not supported by remote learning<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">walker<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">says. Remote learning simply lacks a multitude of early<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">leaning<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">opportunities and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">neccesary<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">caregiver-child interactions<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that then<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">contributes<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">many<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of the children falling behind since remote learning was<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">introduced.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">With children at home on a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">twenty-four hour<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">basis<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">this<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">leaves an open door for parents to participate in their child\u2019s education more than ever before.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Keeping this in mind,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Walker discusses how remote learning and the presence of parents involved in<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">their learning<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">can be<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">helpful.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Considering that positive emotionality, sensitivity, and attentiveness towards the child can nourish their cognitive development, the presence of parents in their child\u2019s education can help them prosper if anything<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(6). These two articles<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">touch on a hidden factor of remote learning that people tend to pay no mind to, the impact on the less fortunate youth.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Masonbrink<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">opens by<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">stating, \u201cthe impact of COVID-19 unfolds, pandemic-related<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">trauma<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and economic instability will disproportionately impact children in poverty, who most heavily rely on school-based services for nutritional, physical, and mental health needs\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(1).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201c&#8230; nutrition programs that serve over 35 million children living in poverty daily\u201d (2).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">She continues to focus on the fact that sometimes<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a school<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">lunch may be the only source of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">food<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">or the only meal a child has every day. The school nurse and teacher everyday general wellness checks may be the only source of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">welfare for children in need.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Masonbrink<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">stresses this because it has become a stressful issue now that remote learning has been introduced. In addition to the wellbeing of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">children in poverty, many questions may arise about technology in order to do remote learning. If a child\u2019s family cannot afford food or<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">healthcare,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">what makes you think they can afford a computer or even<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">internet connection to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">follow through with this new world of education.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Furthermore,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Masonbrink<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">discusses the issue of a potential education gap for the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">young generation being taught via remote learning<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(1).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This gap could cause lower test scores and lower educational sustainment.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Masonbrink<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">also mentions with the unforeseen school closings there is no additional help offered to students with disabilities<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">including time with specialized educators and unique learning environments suitable for these types of students (2).<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Similarly,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Datonye<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Briggs discusses some of the same issues that arise with online learning and children in poverty in his article, \u201cCovid-19: The Effect of Lockdown on Children\u2019s Remote Learning Experience.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">He discusses how many families in Nigeria are affected by remote learning<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">because school made food and all aspects of education accessible and how this may be the cause of an educational gap<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(43).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">In addition to the poverty issue in Nigeria Briggs also discusses some of the general issues that follow remote learning such as the lack of ongoing learning activity<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(49). In person schooling<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">offers roughly 6 hours of educational time, with online learning students tend to get distracted easier, lectures and interpersonal teaching is lost,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all learning is through video or reading there is no actual learning activity taking place.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Because there is no ongoing learning activity there is also no engagement. Without<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the personal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">connections and meaningful<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">lesson<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">students find no interest in material or school at all<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Briggs says (50).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Education via computer is less entertaining and motivating for children because of their short attention span. The skill to obtain a long attention span has not been developed yet, therefore, remote learning isn\u2019t stimulating enough for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">kids<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(50)<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Remote learning is<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">growing new world of education. Although it may be convenient and helpful for some, it is our youth that are going to suffer the most from the lifelong impacts it<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">has.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Online education is not a fit choice for young, developing children because it i<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">s not stimulating nor beneficial mentally, socially, or emotionally for children and these are the basic building blocks of a child\u2019s young life.
