The hearing community<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">has<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">a combination of visual and verbal communication.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">For the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">community, they<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">must<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">count on facial expressions to understand the severity of the words.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Since communication is such a big part of day-to-day living, it\u2019s crucial to know how to communicate with everyone. While reading three scholarly articles about communication and literacy practices<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">within the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">community,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">all three articles related to James Gee\u2019s \u201cWhat is Literacy.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">In Gee\u2019s article, he discussed a myriad of literacy<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">practices including primary and secondary discourse and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">acquisition.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">While<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">majority<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">of people learn how to talk through acquisition, this is slightly different for those in the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">community.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Throughout this essay, those three scholarly articles are going to be compared and related to Gee\u2019s \u201cWhat is Literacy\u201d to help understand the relation between primary and secondary discourses, and the difference between learning and acquisition<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">in the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">community.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>In the article, \u201cParental strategies used in communication with their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>infants\u201d,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the authors Willie<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Beatrijs, Van<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Lierde<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Kristiane, and Van<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Herreweghe<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Mieke,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>begin to describe what will happen during the article.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>First<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>they<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>start off by describing their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>recorded interactions between parents and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>children. All children<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>which<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>were used throughout the study were under the age of three. They also included<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and hearing parents to see the difference between the interaction and communication taking place.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Moving forward, the authors introduce<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the background<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>information. It was found<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>most children do not get screened for any hearing deficiencies and most children who are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf, grow up in a home where both parents are hearing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(166).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>However, in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Flanders, where this observation took<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>place, an<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>agency began to systematically screen all newborns for hearing loss.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This occurred in 1998 and has since gotten the ball rolling on parents<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to start getting audio tests<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>while their children are young. It has been shown that the younger the hearing loss is detected, the chances of having a positive outcome increase<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(Beatrijs, et al.166).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>After parents or caregivers find out if their child has hearing loss, they tend to investigate<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>cochlear<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>implants<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and get the procedure for their child.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Authors then discuss how a child's successful communication is often related to their development of visual attention.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>results from the study find that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>parents engage with their children with visuals.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>parents tend to rely on a combination of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cimplicit\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201ctactile\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>strategies<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>more than oral strategies.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While incorporating implicit and tactile strategies this helps the parents become a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>role model for their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>children<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(176).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The study above<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is comparing different types of communication between parents, hearing and hearing impaired, and their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>children.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>these strategies<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are learned for most parents, some are also learned through acquisition. Following<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Gee\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>definition of both learning and acquisition, it\u2019s clear that the strategies can all be considered as something you<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>learn.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>However,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>parents with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>children, these strategies come more naturally to them which means their learned through acquisition.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>For example, tactile and implicit strategies applied by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>or hard-of-hearing parents are both things they already had<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>learned but<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>applying it to children can be considered acquisition.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>In the second article, \u201cA Summary of the Communication and Literacy Evidence-Based Practices for Students Who Are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>or Hard of Hearing, Visually Impaired, and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deafblind,\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the main purpose of this article was to summarize<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and compare<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>all<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the findings on the topic of communication in the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>community.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>They begin to discuss communication and literacy practices with people who are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>or hard of hearing.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The authors, John Luckner, Susan Bruce, and Kay<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Ferrel,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>mention three general ways to promote communication which include oral, manual, and simultaneous methods.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>These three ways help those who have hearing loss stay connected with friends and family.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Literacy in the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>community is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>completely<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>different<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>than the hearing community.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Authors Lederberg, Schick, and Spencer wrote about this topic in 2013 and said that two skills that are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201crelevant\" to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>or hard of hearing students are \u201clanguage abilities and the ability to use spoken phonological knowledge\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(229). They also go in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>depth<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>visual impairments and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf-blindness. According to Gee,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cAcquisition is a process of acquiring something subconsciously by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>exposure<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to models and a process of trial and error, without a process of formal teaching\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(20).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Gee\u2019s definition of learning is as follows, \u201cLearning<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is a process that involves<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>conscious knowledge gained through teaching, though not necessarily from someone officially designated a teacher\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(20).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>For people who are hearing impaired, they typically learn American Sign Language to communicate with others.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Learning ASL would be considered \u201clearning\u201d following Gee\u2019s definition. And while the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Rehabilitation<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Act and the Americans With<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Disabilities Act are there to prevent any discrimination against<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf, it doesn\u2019t guarantee them a job where they feel accepted.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Stokar<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Orwat<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>conducted a study that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>had research questions that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>looked into<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the issues of \u201caccommodation and integration\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>within the workplace<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(15). class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201clearned\u201d through acquisition.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The managers went through trial and error to understand everything the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>employees needed.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>For example,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>most of the managers had no idea that there<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>has to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>be an interpreter at any staff meetings.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Of course, the manager had no idea because it\u2019s not every day where you hire and have a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>employee, but there are things they need legally.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>All of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the managers that participated in the study said that they were more than happy to help and provide any resources their employees needed, hearing or<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>don\u2019t know how to accommodate the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Accommodating<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the Deaf is something that is very hard for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>society to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span are still learning how to communicate with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Deaf<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>people.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span While reading three scholarly articles about communication and literacy practices<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">within the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">community,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">all three articles related to James Gee\u2019s \u201cWhat is Literacy.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">In Gee\u2019s article, he discussed a myriad of literacy<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">practices including primary and secondary discourse and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">acquisition.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">While<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">majority<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">of people learn how to talk through acquisition, this is slightly different for those in the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">community.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Throughout this essay, those three scholarly articles are going to be compared and related to Gee\u2019s \u201cWhat is Literacy\u201d to help understand the relation between primary and secondary discourses, and the difference between learning and acquisition<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">in the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">community.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\" style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">In the article, \u201cParental strategies used in communication with their<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">infants\u201d,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the authors Willie<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Beatrijs, Van<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Lierde<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Kristiane, and Van<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Herreweghe<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Mieke,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">begin to describe what will happen during the article.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">First<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">they<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">start off by describing their<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">recorded interactions between parents and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">children. All children<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">which<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">were used throughout the study were under the age of three. They also included<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and hearing parents to see the difference between the interaction and communication taking place.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Moving forward, the authors introduce<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the background<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">information. It was found<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">most children do not get screened for any hearing deficiencies and most children who are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf, grow up in a home where both parents are hearing<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(166).\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">However, in<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Flanders, where this observation took<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">place, an<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">agency began to systematically screen all newborns for hearing loss.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This occurred in 1998 and has since gotten the ball rolling on parents<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to start getting audio tests<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">while their children are young. It has been shown that the younger the hearing loss is detected, the chances of having a positive outcome increase<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(Beatrijs, et al.166).\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">After parents or caregivers find out if their child has hearing loss, they tend to investigate<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">cochlear<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">implants<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and get the procedure for their child.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Authors then discuss how a child&#8217;s successful communication is often related to their development of visual attention.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">results from the study find that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">parents engage with their children with visuals.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">parents tend to rely on a combination of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201cimplicit\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201ctactile\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">strategies<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">more than oral strategies.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While incorporating implicit and tactile strategies this helps the parents become a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">role model for their<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">children<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(176).<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The study above<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is comparing different types of communication between parents, hearing and hearing impaired, and their<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">children.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">these strategies<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are learned for most parents, some are also learned through acquisition. Following<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Gee\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">definition of both learning and acquisition, it\u2019s clear that the strategies can all be considered as something you<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">learn.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">However,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">parents with<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">children, these strategies come more naturally to them which means their learned through acquisition.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">For example, tactile and implicit strategies applied by<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">or hard-of-hearing parents are both things they already had<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">learned but<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">applying it to children can be considered acquisition.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">In the second article, \u201cA Summary of the Communication and Literacy Evidence-Based Practices for Students Who Are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">or Hard of Hearing, Visually Impaired, and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deafblind,\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the main purpose of this article was to summarize<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and compare<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the findings on the topic of communication in the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">community.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">They begin to discuss communication and literacy practices with people who are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">or hard of hearing.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The authors, John Luckner, Susan Bruce, and Kay<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Ferrel,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">mention three general ways to promote communication which include oral, manual, and simultaneous methods.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">These three ways help those who have hearing loss stay connected with friends and family.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Literacy in the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">community is<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">completely<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">different<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">than the hearing community.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Authors Lederberg, Schick, and Spencer wrote about this topic in 2013 and said that two skills that are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201crelevant&#8221; to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">or hard of hearing students are \u201clanguage abilities and the ability to use spoken phonological knowledge\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(229). Up front they bring in statistics backing up their topic<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">saying that limits within the workplace reflect on<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">employment rates. People who are hearing<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">have an employment rate that is 26.5% larger than those who are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">apart<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">community (14).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This comparison alone shows people with hearing loss struggle to get a job due to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">them being<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf. And while the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Rehabilitation<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Act and the Americans With<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Disabilities Act are there to prevent any discrimination against<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf, it doesn\u2019t guarantee them a job where they feel accepted.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Stokar<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Orwat<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">conducted a study that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">had research questions that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">looked into<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the issues of \u201caccommodation and integration\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">within the workplace<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(15). They had four research questions<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to better understand the accommodations that were being made for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">employees. The study included two subgroups, hearing managers and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">employees. After asking the four questions, they proceeded to have interviews with six hearing managers and six<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">employees needed.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">For example,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">most of the managers had no idea that there<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">has to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">be an interpreter at any staff meetings.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Of course, the manager had no idea because it\u2019s not every day where you hire and have a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">employee, but there are things they need legally.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">All of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the managers that participated in the study said that they were more than happy to help and provide any resources their employees needed, hearing or<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the articles used throughout this paper relate to each other<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">not only because they all discuss communication and literacy practices in the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">community but because they describe hardships the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">community goes through.<\/span><span depend on facial expressions and body language to help them convey and understand a conversation. While society has been more accepting of people with disabilities, people still<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">don\u2019t know how to accommodate the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Deaf.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Accommodating<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the Deaf is something that is very hard for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">society to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">do as a whole.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">But<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that being
