{"id":374,"date":"2021-07-27T16:20:02","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T16:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.ulib.csuohio.edu\/understanding-literacy-in-our-lives\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=374"},"modified":"2021-07-27T16:20:02","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T16:20:02","slug":"2-7-4-communication-in-basketball-more-vital-than-thought-to-be-research-essay","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.ulib.csuohio.edu\/understanding-literacy-in-our-lives\/chapter\/2-7-4-communication-in-basketball-more-vital-than-thought-to-be-research-essay\/","title":{"rendered":"2.7.4 Communication in basketball: More vital than thought to be (research essay)"},"content":{"raw":"<h3>April 2021<\/h3>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>There are many different aspects and factors that equate into everything that goes on during a basketball game along with how successful the players and team are going to be.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Basketball has long been proven as to be a team sport compared to being just a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>one man<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>team.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Typically,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>it has been proven that you can have one great player to rely<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>on<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>but the supporting players have also played a vital more important role that gets talked about. There are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>some factors as<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to what can bring these types of teams together but there is one starting spot for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>all of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>these teams.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>That starting<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>spot<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>all of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>these teams<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>being how well teams communicate with each other and how well it is understood by everyone on the team.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Every team has different ways that they communicate<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>between<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>each other but the main point between all the teams is that the best ones have a bunch of communication while playing.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>There are some teams that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>will<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>like to use non-verbal types of communication or there are other teams that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>will<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>like to use verbal communication. But<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>all in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>all<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>it still just brings up how each team has a specific form of communication.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This just leads to the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>main focus<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in being communication and literacy in basketball<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are able to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>play a large role in how successful a basketball team will be.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>There are different things that go on through a players and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>coaches'<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>mind not just through a game but also through practices and the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>season as a whole.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Through my days of playing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>basketball,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>have also<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>had many different thoughts and feelings that have gone through my head. With some of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>them it makes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>me wonder what exactly makes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>great teams and what all factors<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>into<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>different aspects of a basketball game. This then leads me to create two main questions<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as for me to research and figure out more about these different aspects.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>These research questions being \u201cWhat kind of literacy practices do basketball players use?\u201d and \u201cWhat kinds of research has currently been done on the topic of communication in basketball?\u201d When you first hear about communication and literacy involved in basketball you will most likely wonder how these things are related in any way<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>basketball. To help explain this more<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>you<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>will<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>see me<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>use different sources that will explain and go into more detail as to not only answer the two previous research questions stated above but provide you with the understanding of how basketball is related<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication in basketball.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The first thing that will be addressed is the first research question of \u201cWhat kind of communication and literacy practices do basketball players use?\u201d Basketball players use many different literacy practices along with communication practices. One example of how literacy gets used by basketball players is by the drawing of plays on whiteboards and the understanding of different words that are being used by players and coaches such as \u201cswitch\u201d or \u201cscreen.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>When it comes to communication though in basketball that is more<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>apparent<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as you often see players talking to each other through games along with talking to coaches. One source that I used to help with the development of the paper is an article called, \u201cBODILY COMMUNICATION<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>IN BASKETBALL\u201d through this article they did studies on<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>how there was communication between<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>players (13). However,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>was not that of the verbal type and was referred to as<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nonverbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication. Verbal and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nonverbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>produce two<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>different factors<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of how communication gets used through a game with each holding<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>different types<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of importance for a team during a game.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Typically,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nonverbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>will be more subtle and usually<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>only the players of that team will be able to understand what is trying to be communicated and is used through bodily movements. Which then leads towards a second source that I used that focused more on<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nonverbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication. This source was, \u201cUsing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Non-Verbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Communication in Sports\u201d the source produced different examples as to how the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nonverbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and verbal communication is used in basketball<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(1). Timeouts are more purposely used to communicate things towards the team<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>discuss what type of defense that the team would want to run along with the possibility of if there is a certain play that they would want to run coming out<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of the timeout.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>There are other forms of communication that are used by basketball players<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>along the lines of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>non-verbally<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>like hand signals. One of the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>most commonly used<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>hand signals is a fist raised up in the air at a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>90-degree<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>angle<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in this case it means that your teammate will be setting a screen on the man that is defending you.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This is not only helpful in the sense that it provides you as the offensive<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>player with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>an advantage over your<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>defender. But it also may help the rest of your team<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as it can create havoc for the rest of defending team<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>especially if they do not<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communicate very well which could then lead to your team having an easy basket to make.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The use of verbal and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nonverbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication between coaches and teammates helps teams perform at a higher level.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The article by James Gee, \u201cWhat is Literacy?\u201d helps explain how communication in basketball can be related<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>literacy in general.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This is the use of \u201cdiscourses\u201d as described by Gee where there are \u201cprimary discourses\u201d and \u201csecondary discourses.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Communication in basketball is not something that will naturally come to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>people<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and it takes time to learn the different ins and outs of the communication factors that are required to be a successful team. Which then brings in the term of \u201csecondary discourse\u201d as this is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>described a language that does not naturally come to you and need to learn and communication in basketball would be described as something like that.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>It is not always easy as to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>learn<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the different terminology that is used by basketball players and coaches<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as there are many terms that are not always used by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>people.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The article by Jeff Haefner, \u201cHow to Develop Great Defensive Communication\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>helps<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>provide<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>some examples of different forms of communication terms that are used by players<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(1).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Such as yelling \u201cshot\u201d or \u201cskip\u201d and by doing this it helps your teammates know and have a better understanding of what is going on<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(1). By yelling<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cshot\u201d it alerts your teammates on defense that the offensive team has taken a shot and that they need to begin boxing out their man to have better position<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to get the rebound. The term \u201cskip\u201d is also another defensive communication term as<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>by yelling this term<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of \u201cskip\u201d it tells your teammates that the ball is being passed across the court sideways<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in the half court<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and that they now need to make a full shift of their defensive position rather than only having to move one position at a time defensively.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Another article by Kyle Ohman, \u201cThe Value of Communication in Basketball\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>relates towards communication also by not using examples but<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of words used for communication but how and when<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the communication should come<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(1).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While most coaches want their teams to communicate often and have a lot of it,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>it\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>not always best to communicate if what is going to be said is not going to have<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>very much meaning with it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>There are many times when there has been communication between a teammate and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>myself<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>where what was said did not<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>have much of a purpose to it and just lead to creating more confusion on the court.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>However as described by Ohman when there is going to be communication it needs to be \u201cearly,\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cloud,\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and \u201coften\u201d (1). By doing these<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>three things it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>allows for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>you and your teammates to be prepared for what is going on and know how to handle it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>An article by Christopher Riches \u201cDefining Communication Between Half Court Defenders\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>like the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>previous<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>two articles is focusing on communication on defense<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(1).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>It also<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>provides<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>even more examples of terms used on defense between teammates.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Yelling \u201ccutter\u201d for example is a term that is not going to be used usually when<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>teams<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are in a man defense. However,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>typically<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>will be used between<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>teammates when they are running a zone defense instead. By yelling \u201ccutter\u201d it alerts your teammates of a man running across the court letting them know that there is another guy that they need to be aware of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>while defending their zone of the defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>As seen continuously throughout the previous paragraph it is imperative that on defense teams are communicating with one another so that way they are all on the same page and no one is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>confused.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While even on offense it is important for communication<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>more times than not teammates are going to have an idea of what is going to need to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>be,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>or the communication is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nonverbal.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Defensively you do not have much of an idea as to what the other team is going to do or<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>try<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>do it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>So,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to ensure that you and your teammates<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are on the same page and being in sync having a lot of communication will help<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>make sure that there are not any errors that would help the other team score on you easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Players and coaches have many different forms of communication whether it be through literature or through communication. So often people think that the best teams are all talent related while in all reality and facets of the game<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>talent has some<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>effect<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>on how good a team<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>but they must be able to communicate effectively with each other also. This then leads to the next research question that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I have presented which is \u201cWhat kinds of research have been done on communication in basketball?\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>There have been many studies on communication in basketball much so like most any other topic that you may think of. With many of them presenting different findings and examples<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>of how communication in basketball in basketball can affect not just the game but also how it affects the chemistry that is brought about between a team of players along with coaches.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Research that is being done on this kind of topic that is relating<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>sports has become more apparent than ever as some of the things that are being found<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are now being used more and more in sports. Analytics is something that used to be<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>overlooked<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>by many coaches and other positions throughout a sports organization. Now it seems as if coaches and these other members cannot do without being able<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to see the different stats that are being found and observed. With all of this being<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>led<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>by the researchers that are finding and presenting this sort of information as to topics such as communication in basketball.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Examples of the different areas that these researchers are looking towards in how communication in a basketball game<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>who<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is communicating with who on a team as there are often certain positions that will be communicating with one another more often<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>than<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that of another position.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Typically, it will be your forwards which are the center, power forward, and small forward who will communicate with each other more often than they would communicate with the guards which is the point guard and shooting guard. The<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>reason<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for this being<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that the guards play similar positions<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that of what the forwards would play. Guards are usually smaller and more agile so they stay more on the outside of the perimeter or arc, while the forwards will be more inside of the arc and perimeter because they are bigger and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>utilized<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>more around the basket.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Another area that these researchers have looked more into was the affect that the game is having on the amount of communication that is being used between the players and coaches.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>When teams are at their best in winning the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>game,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>they are communicating the most but when they are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>losing,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>especially by a larger<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>margin,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>they will not communicate as much. Not even having to look or read about the research on this I could tell you from all the games that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I have played that this finding is especially true. As when you are winning you and the rest of your team is playing free and loose while communicating, but when you are losing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>all of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>those changes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as everyone<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is up tight and just creates a feeling<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that leads to no one wanting to talk and communicate with one another. This just makes it even harder for teams to come back and want to win.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>In an article by Phillip Furley and Geoffrey Schweizer, \u201cI\u2019m Pretty Sure that We Will Win! The Influence of Score-Related Nonverbal Behavior Changes on the Confidence in Winning a Basketball Game\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>it was found throughout a study of how<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>the progress in a game can help determine what players and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>coaches'<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>reactions will be both verbally and non-verbally<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(317).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While I have already discussed this topic a little in previous paragraphs it is still<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>an important thing for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>a team<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as a whole to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>have good communication even if your team is not winning.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Furley and Schweizer<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>adds<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>another aspect<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>what might influence communication and that is \u201cconfidence\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(317).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>That feeling of \u201cconfidence\u201d can do many things not only just for your game<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>but for your<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication as a whole.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While you will not be able to always have a lot of \u201cconfidence\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>because that is just the way that basketball works. Most often teams that have a lot of \u201cconfidence\u201d may lose it for a short amount of time but always will get it back.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Another article by Michael J. Rifenburg, \u201cThe Literate Practices of a Division II Men\u2019s Team\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>actually follows<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>men\u2019s college basketball team and watches all the different communication and literary practices<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>that were performed by the basketball team<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(55).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The drawing up of plays<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in timeouts<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and discussions of how to improve things like plays or defenses are all examples of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication and literacy that was noticed by Rifenburg<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(61).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While to the average spectator it may seem as if teams go as the coach says that they should, in the sense that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>plays are ran the way that the coach<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>says,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>or defenses being called.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>In actuality though<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>coaches quite often will ask the players and other coaches their opinions on what they think about certain plays or what they think could be improved<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>with it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>During games it is not as much communication about plays but more about defenses that the team may want to run<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>because it is not always apparent to the coach as to what the team may be comfortable or confident in running.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This helps show<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>how communication<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>can be an important part of a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>team's<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>success even though it is not directly a part of the game and happening during the game but more so during time outs and breaks.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Another set of research that has been performed regarding communication in basketball has not been so much of what effects on the game that communication can have but what it has on players and coaches psychologically.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>One study by Danielle Alexander, et al. \u201cCoaches\u2019 Use of Positive<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Tactile Communication in Collegiate Basketball\u201d went through and analyzed how the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>use of encouraging words in communication<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>can either positively or negatively affect a team and their performance<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(91).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I believe that there are certain moments when this type of non-verbal communication can and will be affective for your<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>team. However, always deciding to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>be using<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>positive behavior even when it is not warranted such as when your team makes a mistake it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is not necessarily something that should be used.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>I think that if you are always using positive behavior even on mistakes then you will leave you and your team with very little room to grow as they will not think that they need to improve on anything because you are not pointing out things that need to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>be fixed.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Alexander, et al. bring another point as to what the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>non-verbal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>positive behavior can lead to and that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is mentally defeating your opponent<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(91).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>This does prove true most of the time as an opponent when you see the other team celebrating and high fiving one another it usually means that they are doing things right and doing better than what you are doing.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Jerome<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Bourbousson, et al.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>article \u201cTeam Coordination in Basketball: Description of Cognitive Connections Among Teammates\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is along the lines of Alexander, et al. article of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>communication between players and coaches<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(150). The article by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Bourbousson, et al. looks specifically at just the players<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(150).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The players together were found communicating<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>as a whole was<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>lacking however certain people would communicate<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>better with another than another player would communicate with that same person.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>So,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>when you see<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>this,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>especially if it goes on for an entirety of a game it will slowly mentally defeat you<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>proving how the use of positive non-verbal behavior can be very useful at times.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Games<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>are able to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>mentally wear on a team and their coaches especially when you begin to start having multiple games<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>which lead to you having to game plan more and more for multiples of teams.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>In having to game plan for multiple games and teams it becomes a strain so by teams during these games mentally challenging you and your team<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>it only gives that other team an advantage over you due to you already having a struggling mindset from the other factors that are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>going into each of the games.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>The final section of how communication in basketball can affect a team and the team\u2019s success<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>is another part that is not part of the game directly but how it can bring together a team. The use of communication between all sections of the team can prove to be a lot larger of an<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>effect<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>on a team and the way they perform in the sense that it creates a sense of belonging throughout the whole team. Rather than just the main players only communicating with each other, by communicating with the whole team it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>allows for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>everyone to feel like they are part of the team and incorporate something into the success of the team. From the teams that I have played on in basketball we have all known each<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>other,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>which helps us already because we already have that sense of bonding<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>and communicating<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>with each other.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>With this communication through one another it helped us create the type of locker room where there was not one guy that could not contribute towards the team success. In doing so<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>even the guys that did not get a whole lot of playing time still were being involved in the game by communicating from the bench. This may seem<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>overrated<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>but when the bench is helping with communication it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>only makes the team stronger as a whole because of more sets of eyes watching what the other team is doing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Robin Bell and Carlos F. Riol\u2019s article, \u201cThe Impact of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Cross Cultural<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Communication on Collective Efficacy<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in NCAA Basketball Teams\u201d helps demonstrate how important it can be for teams that bond together to allow for them<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>to perform at their highest level of potential<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(176).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>It may not<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>seem like<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>much of a problem for teams to communicate with one another. However, it can be even more difficult<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>for those teams that have people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds to communicate effectively and can lead to struggles for teams as they may not want to communicate. Through<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>Bell and Riol along with their studies it was found that those teams with different cultures on their team that those that could communicate well were able to be successful on the court while communicating with one another<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>(178).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While the different cultures of players<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>have<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>nothing to do with the amount of talent each player or team is going to have. It can be difficult sometimes to get the communication factor down but once these teams do end up getting the communication factor figured out it can usually<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>allow for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>them to connect with one another more. In having them connect better it only strengthens the chances of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>allowing for<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>you and your team to be able to win.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>While there have been many<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>demonstrated<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>on how teams can be successful in playing basketball communication has been<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>a very important<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>one for teams to have.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>go<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>through the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>different aspects<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span were the two main types of communication used in basketball and then there are some literary types of communication that are used<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>between a team such as the drawing of plays in timeouts or the use of film in film sessions.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>But through all these<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>different factors<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>in communication in basketball it all plays<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span>an There are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">some factors as<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to what can bring these types of teams together but there is one starting spot for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">these teams.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">That starting<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">spot<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">these teams<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">being how well teams communicate with each other and how well it is understood by everyone on the team.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Every team has different ways that they communicate<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">between<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">each other but the main point between all the teams is that the best ones have a bunch of communication while playing.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">There are some teams that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">will<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">like to use non-verbal types of communication or there are other teams that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">will<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">like to use verbal communication. But<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all in<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">it still just brings up how each team has a specific form of communication.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This just leads to the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">main focus<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">in being communication and literacy in basketball<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are able to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">play a large role in how successful a basketball team will be.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">There are different things that go on through a players and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">coaches&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">mind not just through a game but also through practices and the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">season as a whole.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Through my days of playing<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">basketball,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">have also<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">had many different thoughts and feelings that have gone through my head. With some of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">them it makes<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">me wonder what exactly makes<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">great teams and what all factors<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">into<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">different aspects of a basketball game. This then leads me to create two main questions<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as for me to research and figure out more about these different aspects.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">These research questions being \u201cWhat kind of literacy practices do basketball players use?\u201d and \u201cWhat kinds of research has currently been done on the topic of communication in basketball?\u201d When you first hear about communication and literacy involved in basketball you will most likely wonder how these things are related in any way<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">with<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">basketball. To help explain this more<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">you<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">will<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">see me<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">use different sources that will explain and go into more detail as to not only answer the two previous research questions stated above but provide you with the understanding of how basketball is related<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">with<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication in basketball.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The first thing that will be addressed is the first research question of \u201cWhat kind of communication and literacy practices do basketball players use?\u201d Basketball players use many different literacy practices along with communication practices. One example of how literacy gets used by basketball players is by the drawing of plays on whiteboards and the understanding of different words that are being used by players and coaches such as \u201cswitch\u201d or \u201cscreen.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">When it comes to communication though in basketball that is more<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">apparent<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as you often see players talking to each other through games along with talking to coaches. One source that I used to help with the development of the paper is an article called, \u201cBODILY COMMUNICATION<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">IN BASKETBALL\u201d through this article they did studies on<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">how there was communication between<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">players (13). However,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">was not that of the verbal type and was referred to as<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nonverbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication. Verbal and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nonverbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">produce two<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">different factors<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of how communication gets used through a game with each holding<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">different types<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of importance for a team during a game.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Typically,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nonverbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">will be more subtle and usually<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">only the players of that team will be able to understand what is trying to be communicated and is used through bodily movements. Which then leads towards a second source that I used that focused more on<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nonverbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication. This source was, \u201cUsing<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Non-Verbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Communication in Sports\u201d the source produced different examples as to how the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nonverbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and verbal communication is used in basketball<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(1). Timeouts are more purposely used to communicate things towards the team<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">discuss what type of defense that the team would want to run along with the possibility of if there is a certain play that they would want to run coming out<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of the timeout.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">There are other forms of communication that are used by basketball players<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">along the lines of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">non-verbally<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">like hand signals. One of the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">most commonly used<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">hand signals is a fist raised up in the air at a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">90-degree<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">angle<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">in this case it means that your teammate will be setting a screen on the man that is defending you.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This is not only helpful in the sense that it provides you as the offensive<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">player with<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">an advantage over your<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">defender. But it also may help the rest of your team<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as it can create havoc for the rest of defending team<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">especially if they do not<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communicate very well which could then lead to your team having an easy basket to make.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The use of verbal and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nonverbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication between coaches and teammates helps teams perform at a higher level.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The article by James Gee, \u201cWhat is Literacy?\u201d helps explain how communication in basketball can be related<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">literacy in general.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This is the use of \u201cdiscourses\u201d as described by Gee where there are \u201cprimary discourses\u201d and \u201csecondary discourses.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Communication in basketball is not something that will naturally come to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">people<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and it takes time to learn the different ins and outs of the communication factors that are required to be a successful team. Which then brings in the term of \u201csecondary discourse\u201d as this is<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">described a language that does not naturally come to you and need to learn and communication in basketball would be described as something like that.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">It is not always easy as to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">learn<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the different terminology that is used by basketball players and coaches<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as there are many terms that are not always used by<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">people.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The article by Jeff Haefner, \u201cHow to Develop Great Defensive Communication\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">helps<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">provide<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">some examples of different forms of communication terms that are used by players<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(1).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Such as yelling \u201cshot\u201d or \u201cskip\u201d and by doing this it helps your teammates know and have a better understanding of what is going on<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(1). By yelling<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201cshot\u201d it alerts your teammates on defense that the offensive team has taken a shot and that they need to begin boxing out their man to have better position<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to get the rebound. The term \u201cskip\u201d is also another defensive communication term as<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">by yelling this term<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of \u201cskip\u201d it tells your teammates that the ball is being passed across the court sideways<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">in the half court<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and that they now need to make a full shift of their defensive position rather than only having to move one position at a time defensively.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Another article by Kyle Ohman, \u201cThe Value of Communication in Basketball\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">relates towards communication also by not using examples but<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of words used for communication but how and when<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the communication should come<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(1).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While most coaches want their teams to communicate often and have a lot of it,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">it\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">not always best to communicate if what is going to be said is not going to have<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">very much meaning with it.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">There are many times when there has been communication between a teammate and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">myself<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">where what was said did not<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">have much of a purpose to it and just lead to creating more confusion on the court.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">However as described by Ohman when there is going to be communication it needs to be \u201cearly,\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201cloud,\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and \u201coften\u201d (1). By doing these<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">three things it<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">allows for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">you and your teammates to be prepared for what is going on and know how to handle it.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">An article by Christopher Riches \u201cDefining Communication Between Half Court Defenders\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">like the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">previous<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">two articles is focusing on communication on defense<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(1).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">It also<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">provides<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">even more examples of terms used on defense between teammates.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Yelling \u201ccutter\u201d for example is a term that is not going to be used usually when<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">teams<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are in a man defense. However,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">typically<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">will be used between<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">teammates when they are running a zone defense instead. By yelling \u201ccutter\u201d it alerts your teammates of a man running across the court letting them know that there is another guy that they need to be aware of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">while defending their zone of the defense.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">As seen continuously throughout the previous paragraph it is imperative that on defense teams are communicating with one another so that way they are all on the same page and no one is<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">confused.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While even on offense it is important for communication<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">more times than not teammates are going to have an idea of what is going to need to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">be,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">or the communication is<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nonverbal.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Defensively you do not have much of an idea as to what the other team is going to do or<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">try<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">do it.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">So,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to ensure that you and your teammates<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are on the same page and being in sync having a lot of communication will help<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">make sure that there are not any errors that would help the other team score on you easier.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Players and coaches have many different forms of communication whether it be through literature or through communication. So often people think that the best teams are all talent related while in all reality and facets of the game<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">talent has some<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">effect<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">on how good a team<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">but they must be able to communicate effectively with each other also. This then leads to the next research question that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I have presented which is \u201cWhat kinds of research have been done on communication in basketball?\u201d<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">There have been many studies on communication in basketball much so like most any other topic that you may think of. With many of them presenting different findings and examples<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">of how communication in basketball in basketball can affect not just the game but also how it affects the chemistry that is brought about between a team of players along with coaches.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Research that is being done on this kind of topic that is relating<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">sports has become more apparent than ever as some of the things that are being found<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are now being used more and more in sports. Analytics is something that used to be<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">overlooked<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">by many coaches and other positions throughout a sports organization. Now it seems as if coaches and these other members cannot do without being able<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to see the different stats that are being found and observed. With all of this being<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">led<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">by the researchers that are finding and presenting this sort of information as to topics such as communication in basketball.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Examples of the different areas that these researchers are looking towards in how communication in a basketball game<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">who<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is communicating with who on a team as there are often certain positions that will be communicating with one another more often<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">than<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that of another position.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Typically, it will be your forwards which are the center, power forward, and small forward who will communicate with each other more often than they would communicate with the guards which is the point guard and shooting guard. The<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">reason<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for this being<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that the guards play similar positions<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that of what the forwards would play. Guards are usually smaller and more agile so they stay more on the outside of the perimeter or arc, while the forwards will be more inside of the arc and perimeter because they are bigger and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">utilized<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">more around the basket.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Another area that these researchers have looked more into was the affect that the game is having on the amount of communication that is being used between the players and coaches.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">When teams are at their best in winning the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">game,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">they are communicating the most but when they are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">losing,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">especially by a larger<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">margin,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">they will not communicate as much. Not even having to look or read about the research on this I could tell you from all the games that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I have played that this finding is especially true. As when you are winning you and the rest of your team is playing free and loose while communicating, but when you are losing<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">all of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">those changes<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as everyone<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is up tight and just creates a feeling<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that leads to no one wanting to talk and communicate with one another. This just makes it even harder for teams to come back and want to win.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">In an article by Phillip Furley and Geoffrey Schweizer, \u201cI\u2019m Pretty Sure that We Will Win! The Influence of Score-Related Nonverbal Behavior Changes on the Confidence in Winning a Basketball Game\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">it was found throughout a study of how<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the progress in a game can help determine what players and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">coaches&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">reactions will be both verbally and non-verbally<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(317).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While I have already discussed this topic a little in previous paragraphs it is still<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">an important thing for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a team<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as a whole to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">have good communication even if your team is not winning.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Furley and Schweizer<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">adds<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">another aspect<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">what might influence communication and that is \u201cconfidence\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(317).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">That feeling of \u201cconfidence\u201d can do many things not only just for your game<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">but for your<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication as a whole.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While you will not be able to always have a lot of \u201cconfidence\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">because that is just the way that basketball works. Most often teams that have a lot of \u201cconfidence\u201d may lose it for a short amount of time but always will get it back.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Another article by Michael J. Rifenburg, \u201cThe Literate Practices of a Division II Men\u2019s Team\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">actually follows<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">men\u2019s college basketball team and watches all the different communication and literary practices<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">that were performed by the basketball team<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(55).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The drawing up of plays<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">in timeouts<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and discussions of how to improve things like plays or defenses are all examples of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication and literacy that was noticed by Rifenburg<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(61).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While to the average spectator it may seem as if teams go as the coach says that they should, in the sense that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">plays are ran the way that the coach<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">says,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">or defenses being called.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">In actuality though<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">coaches quite often will ask the players and other coaches their opinions on what they think about certain plays or what they think could be improved<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">with it.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">During games it is not as much communication about plays but more about defenses that the team may want to run<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">because it is not always apparent to the coach as to what the team may be comfortable or confident in running.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This helps show<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">how communication<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">can be an important part of a<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">team&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">success even though it is not directly a part of the game and happening during the game but more so during time outs and breaks.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Another set of research that has been performed regarding communication in basketball has not been so much of what effects on the game that communication can have but what it has on players and coaches psychologically.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">One study by Danielle Alexander, et al. \u201cCoaches\u2019 Use of Positive<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Tactile Communication in Collegiate Basketball\u201d went through and analyzed how the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">use of encouraging words in communication<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">can either positively or negatively affect a team and their performance<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(91).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I believe that there are certain moments when this type of non-verbal communication can and will be affective for your<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">team. However, always deciding to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">be using<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">positive behavior even when it is not warranted such as when your team makes a mistake it<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is not necessarily something that should be used.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I think that if you are always using positive behavior even on mistakes then you will leave you and your team with very little room to grow as they will not think that they need to improve on anything because you are not pointing out things that need to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">be fixed.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Alexander, et al. bring another point as to what the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">non-verbal<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">positive behavior can lead to and that<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is mentally defeating your opponent<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(91).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">This does prove true most of the time as an opponent when you see the other team celebrating and high fiving one another it usually means that they are doing things right and doing better than what you are doing.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Jerome<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Bourbousson, et al.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">article \u201cTeam Coordination in Basketball: Description of Cognitive Connections Among Teammates\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is along the lines of Alexander, et al. article of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">communication between players and coaches<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(150). The article by<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Bourbousson, et al. looks specifically at just the players<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(150).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The players together were found communicating<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">as a whole was<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">lacking however certain people would communicate<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">better with another than another player would communicate with that same person.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">So,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">when you see<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">this,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">especially if it goes on for an entirety of a game it will slowly mentally defeat you<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">proving how the use of positive non-verbal behavior can be very useful at times.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Games<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">are able to<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">mentally wear on a team and their coaches especially when you begin to start having multiple games<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">which lead to you having to game plan more and more for multiples of teams.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">In having to game plan for multiple games and teams it becomes a strain so by teams during these games mentally challenging you and your team<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">it only gives that other team an advantage over you due to you already having a struggling mindset from the other factors that are<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">going into each of the games.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The final section of how communication in basketball can affect a team and the team\u2019s success<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">is another part that is not part of the game directly but how it can bring together a team. The use of communication between all sections of the team can prove to be a lot larger of an<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">effect<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">on a team and the way they perform in the sense that it creates a sense of belonging throughout the whole team. Rather than just the main players only communicating with each other, by communicating with the whole team it<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">allows for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">everyone to feel like they are part of the team and incorporate something into the success of the team. From the teams that I have played on in basketball we have all known each<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">other,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">which helps us already because we already have that sense of bonding<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and communicating<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">with each other.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">With this communication through one another it helped us create the type of locker room where there was not one guy that could not contribute towards the team success. In doing so<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">even the guys that did not get a whole lot of playing time still were being involved in the game by communicating from the bench. This may seem<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">overrated<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">but when the bench is helping with communication it<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">only makes the team stronger as a whole because of more sets of eyes watching what the other team is doing.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Robin Bell and Carlos F. Riol\u2019s article, \u201cThe Impact of<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Cross Cultural<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Communication on Collective Efficacy<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">in NCAA Basketball Teams\u201d helps demonstrate how important it can be for teams that bond together to allow for them<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">to perform at their highest level of potential<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(176).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">It may not<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">seem like<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">much of a problem for teams to communicate with one another. However, it can be even more difficult<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">for those teams that have people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds to communicate effectively and can lead to struggles for teams as they may not want to communicate. Through<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Bell and Riol along with their studies it was found that those teams with different cultures on their team that those that could communicate well were able to be successful on the court while communicating with one another<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">(178).<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While the different cultures of players<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">have<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nothing to do with the amount of talent each player or team is going to have. It can be difficult sometimes to get the communication factor down but once these teams do end up getting the communication factor figured out it can usually<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">allow for<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">them to connect with one another more.
