Quick Start Guides
Department Chair/School Director Quick Start Guide
- Create a list of current GenEd 08 courses in your program areas
- Work with instructors and your curriculum committee to decide which courses to revise for the Inquiry Core Curriculum. In doing so, keep in mind the following:
- Existing GenEd08 courses that are 300- or 400-level will not be eligible for the new core. All Core Curriculum courses must be offered at the 100- or 200-level.
- Core Curricular courses cannot also be Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) or Speaking Across the Curriculum (SPAC) courses. If submitting a current WAC/SPAC course for the new core curriculum, it will lose its WAC/SPAC status. Similarly, if submitting a course under the recently updated WAC guidelines, it will not be eligible for submission as part of the Core Curriculum.
- See available templates for this process in the handbook crowdsourced resources pageĀ .
- Provide instructors with support (see Instructor Quick Start Guide)
- Decide which new courses may be appropriate to develop in your area
- Consider developing a First Year Experience course
- Think about synergies with other departments and program areas for potential pathways
- Submit all course revisions and proposals to Curriculog to meet the October 31, 2024 deadline for approval by the UCC.
- Add Core Curriculum courses to the Academic Year 2025-2026 schedules
- Sunset any Gened08 courses that remain (not part of the Inquiry Core Curriculum) or add fewer sections to your schedule as appropriate
- In general, courses approved for the Inquiry Core Curriculum will satisfy GenEd08 requirements as well, reducing or eliminating any need to still offer distinctively GenEd08 courses just for students on prior catalog rights.
- Revise programs as required. In doing so, keep the following in mind:
- You may have 2+2 articulation agreements with community college partners. Those should be updated as well.
- The changes to Writing Across the Curriculum/Speaking Across the Curriculum requirements should be reflected in a program update. In particular, the reduction in required courses from 3 to 2, and the requirement that all major programs must have at least one required WAC/SPAC course in the discipline and not as a part of a capstone experience.
- Submit program changes in Curriculog (August 2024-March 2025)
