Chapter 2. Faculty Reflective Practice

Level 3: Develop a Strategic Plan

Make a Commitment to Inclusive Teaching through a Strategic Plan

A DEI commitment statement is a written declaration in which an individual, organization, or institution expresses their dedication to principles of diversity, inclusion and equity and outlines their intentions and actions in promoting equity, inclusivity, and fairness in various aspects of society. Here are steps to help you write a DEI commitment statement as a professor at CSU

      1. Define Your Values and Beliefs.

Start by reflecting on your personal values and beliefs regarding social justice. What issues or causes matter most to you? What principles guide your commitment to social justice? Consider the core values of fairness, equity, inclusivity, empathy, and accountability.

      1. Set Clear Goals.

Define clear and measurable goals for your commitment to inclusive teaching. What do you hope to achieve? Your goals should be specific, achievable, and aligned with your values and beliefs.

      1. Address Your Sphere of Influence.

Consider how your commitment to social justice can be applied within your personal life, workplace, community, or organization. Identify the areas where you have the most influence and where your efforts can be most effective.

      1. Acknowledge Privilege and Bias.

Be honest about your own privilege and potential biases. Recognize how your background, identity, and experiences may affect your approach to social justice. Commit to ongoing self-awareness and growth.

      1. Commit to Learning and Education.

Express your dedication to continually educating yourself about social justice issues, including the history, perspectives, and experiences of marginalized communities and students. Commit to staying informed and open to new ideas and perspectives.

      1. Action Steps and Strategies.

Describe the specific actions, strategies, or initiatives you plan to undertake to advance social justice. These could include advocacy, volunteering, donations, policy changes, diversity and inclusion initiatives, or community engagement efforts.

      1. Accountability and Evaluation.

Outline how you will hold yourself accountable for your commitments and goals. Consider setting up regular check-ins or evaluations to assess your progress and make necessary adjustments.

      1. Engage with Others.

Express your willingness to collaborate with like-minded individuals, organizations, or communities to amplify the impact of your social justice efforts.

      1. Draft Your Statement.

Write your commitment statement, incorporating the elements above into a clear, concise, and authentic declaration of your dedication to social justice. Be sure to use inclusive language and emphasize your commitment to meaningful action.

      1. Share and Implement.

Share your social justice commitment statement with relevant stakeholders, such as colleagues, friends, or your organization. Begin implementing your plans and actions immediately.

Periodically revisit and revise your commitment statement as you learn and grow in your journey toward social justice. Be open to feedback and adapt your strategies as needed.

Remember that this commitment statement is a dynamic document that evolves over time as you deepen your understanding and engagement with social justice issues. It should serve as a guide and a reminder of your ongoing commitment to making positive change in the world.
