About the Author

Darwin H. Stapleton (B.A., Swarthmore College, 1969; M.A., 1970, Ph.D., 1975, University of Delaware), was Executive Director of the Rockefeller Archive Center (1986-2008). He taught at Case Western Reserve University (1976-1986) and the University of Massachusetts Boston (2010-2014), and was Associate Editor of The Papers of Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1974-1984). He has authored, co-authored, edited, and co-edited fourteen volumes, and over 80 scholarly articles, in the history of technology, science, medicine, public health, philanthropy, education, and urbanization.
