Appendix I

ROMANIAN IMMIGRATION

Romanian immigration to the United States from 1871 to 1930 according to United States Census figures:

1871-1889 11
1881-1890 6,348
1891-1900 12,750
1901-1910 53,008
1911-1920 13,311
1921-1930 67,646

The figures relating to the years between 1871-1920 do not include Romanians who came here from Transylvania, Bucovina or Bessarabia, since these provinces were under other than Romanian rule. The majority of Romanians in the United States, however, came from these provinces. If “mother tongue” had been used as the basis of classification, the United States Census would have shown a much greater number of Romanians here than indicated in official reports.
