Preface and Acknowledgements

The first edition of this OER (Open Educational Resource) book was made available in October 2022. Since its release, significant advancements have occurred, including the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT and other Large Language Models (LLMs), which have influenced the education sphere. However, the revisions in this edition were not solely driven by AI developments. Updates addressed feedback and improved the book’s effectiveness as a learning resource. Exercises were added to promote active engagement, and several sections were expanded to provide clearer explanations and better support students in mastering the material. Additionally, the book’s adoption by more than 40 professors worldwide for their project management classes underscores its value and has inspired further refinements to meet diverse classroom needs.

In this book, I wanted to demonstrate how project managers and teams can use project management software to facilitate their work. You can find tutorials on Microsoft Project, a popular project management software program utilized worldwide by numerous project managers and teams, at the end of Chapter 4 (Project Planning), Chapter 7 (Scheduling), Chapter 8 (Resource Management), Chapter 9 (Budget and Procurement), and Chapter 11 (Monitoring and Controlling).

Besides, instructors can download PowerPoint presentations prepared for each chapter in the “PowerPoint Presentations for Instructors” section. Instructors can access the files after they fill out the “Interest/Adoption Form”.

While writing the first edition of this book, I benefited from the earlier OER books. I want to thank the authors and contributors for their great work. These works are:

This book’s first and second editions would not be possible without Cleveland State University’s (CSU) support. The Textbook Affordability Summer Symposium introduced me to the world of OERs in the summer of 2021. During this symposium, I understood that this was the solution I had been looking for to ensure that students and all learners could access good quality resources free of charge. So, I decided to apply for the Fall 2021 Textbook Affordability Grant. Approval of my application led to a long, tiring, but very exciting process. This book wouldn’t have been possible without the greatest project team of Amanda Goodsett, the Librarian and OER and Copyright Advisor, and Barbara Loomis, the Digital Scholarly Publications and Programs Administrator, both from the Michael Schwartz Library of CSU. I immensely thank Mandi and Barb for their assistance, suggestions, and infinite patience during the preparation and publication of both editions.

I also owe an enormous gratitude to the reviewers who gave me detailed and constructive comments on all the chapters in both editions.
