Part III. Institutional Resources

The Archives of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland

Chancery Building
Cleveland, Ohio 44114

The Archives of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland are located on the third floor of the Chancery Building at 1027 Superior Avenue in Cleveland.

The Archives maintains the official, non-current records of the Cleveland bishops. This involves correspondence of the bishops with various parishes, institutions, religious communities, and individuals. The Archives also keeps a complete run of the diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Universe Bulletin, on microfilm. The Archives possesses a collection of published parish and diocesan histories. There is a small picture collection present.

The Catholic Diocese makes its archives available for research purposes. Due to staff limitations, the Diocese asks that all requests to use the Archives be made by appointment only. All those seeking permission should contact the Chancellor, Rev. Frank P. Kosem at 1027 Superior Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44114 by letter.

The Diocese also provides aid in genealogical inquires. Since church law states that sacramental records be closed, we cannot show the specific record, but we can make the information available. Sister M. Robertine of the Archives staff will handle genealogical requests. The first hour of work is free, the charge for each additional hour is $4.00. Please direct all inquiries to her by letter at the Archives, 1027 Superior Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44114.

For general questions of a non-genealogical nature please call 696-6525, Ext. 345. The Archives are open Monday through Friday, 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
