So far in this book we have covered biological, psychological, and social domains. An understanding of the role and function of spirituality is the missing link to the full bio-psycho-social-spiritual perspective. While not salient to all clients, it is important for substance misuse counseling professionals to integrate spiritual domains into a comprehensive assessment. When indicated, spiritual or religious substance abuse treatment may enhance treatment for some clients.
After engaging with these reading materials and learning resources, you should be able to
- Explain spiritually linked models of addiction and counseling
- Define spirituality and religion
- Describe the role of religion and spirituality in substance misuse prevention and recovery
- Identify components of a spiritual assessment in substance misuse counseling
