This political cartoon is depicting the German Army, also known as the Wehrmacht, marching into the jaws of Death. In the summer of 1942 the German High Command made a decision that they were going to attack and take the city of Stalingrad, found in the southern part of the Soviet Union. The Battle of Stalingrad began began on August 23rd, 1942 and ended on February 2nd, 1943 resulting in a crushing defeat for the Germans.
This cartoon was drawn by a political cartoonist named Daniel Robert Fitzpatrick and was published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1942 when it became clear the Nazis new objective was capturing Stalingrad.
