Chapter 12 – Career Options in State Government

12.1 Definition of Public Service

Public service refers to a range of services provided by the government to its citizens, either directly through public agencies or by financing private services. These services are aimed at improving the quality of life for the community and ensuring the well-being of the public. Public service encompasses various sectors such as education, healthcare, transportation, public safety, social services, and infrastructure.

Employees in public service roles are responsible for implementing and managing programs that address the needs and interests of the public. They work in local, state, and federal government positions and are dedicated to serving the community by providing essential services, creating policies, and ensuring that resources are distributed fairly and efficiently. The ultimate goal of public service is to enhance the common good and contribute to a functioning, equitable, and just society.
