Chapter 19 – Collaborative Efforts Between Local Governments & Nonprofits

Nonprofit organizations are groups that work to benefit the public without aiming to make a profit. Unlike businesses that exist to earn money for their owners, nonprofits use their funds to further their missions, which often include helping people, protecting the environment, improving communities or promoting education. These organizations can take many forms, including charities, foundations, and service providers.

In this chapter, you will explore how local governments and nonprofit organizations collaborate to address community needs. Key examples, such as the various community development corporations (CDCs) in Northeast Ohio, will illustrate effective collaborations in action. Additionally, you will discover how philanthropic foundations support local government initiatives. By the end of this chapter, you will understand how these partnerships build stronger, more resilient communities. Community resilience refers to the ability of a community to withstand and recover from adverse events, such as economic downturns, social disruptions, pandemics, and other disasters.
