Chapter 4 – Foundations of Ohio Government
4.10 Your Responsibilities & Obligations
While the state constitution guarantees you certain rights, certain responsibilities and obligations accompany your citizenship. Ohio citizens are encouraged to participate in the democratic process by voting in elections, attending public meetings, and engaging in community activities. Staying informed about local issues and government actions, as well as respecting the rights and freedoms of others, are also key responsibilities. By fulfilling these duties, Ohio citizens contribute to the well-being and stability of their communities and the state as a whole.

As a citizen, you have certain responsibilities and obligations that are crucial for the health and functioning of our democracy. These responsibilities include voting in elections, staying informed about local and national issues, respecting the rights and opinions of others, and obeying laws. By fulfilling these duties, you contribute to the well-being of your community and the country. For students like you, this means actively participating in civic life in various ways.
You can engage in civic activities by voting in local, state, and national elections to ensure your voice is heard in the decision-making process. Staying informed about issues that affect your community and beyond is also important; this can be done by following reliable news sources, attending public meetings, and discussing current events with peers and family. Volunteering for community service projects, joining student organizations focused on social or political issues, and participating in peaceful protests or advocacy campaigns are other ways to get involved. By taking these actions, you not only fulfill your responsibilities as a citizen but also help shape the future of your community and society.
