Chapter 10 – State Agencies

10.1 State Agencies

State agencies in Ohio serve as an extension of the executive branch, implementing laws and ensuring the effective operation of the state government. These agencies are instrumental in translating legislative intent into actionable programs and services.

Among the prominent state agencies is the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), which is responsible for maintaining and improving the state’s transportation infrastructure. ODOT oversees the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and public transit systems, ensuring safe and efficient travel for residents and supporting economic development through effective transportation networks. Another key agency, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), plays a vital role in public health by implementing disease prevention strategies, managing public health crises, and providing health education to the public. ODH’s research and data analysis inform health policies and initiatives that aim to improve community health outcomes.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exemplifies the role of state agencies in environmental regulation and protection. The Ohio EPA monitors pollution levels, enforces environmental laws, and conducts public outreach to promote conservation practices and environmental awareness. Additionally, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) provides critical social services, including unemployment benefits, child welfare programs, and workforce development initiatives, helping to support the well-being of Ohio’s residents.
