Chapter 21 – Career Options in Local Government

21.13 CSU Majors That Will Prepare You for a Career in Local Government

Two majors are particularly relevant here: Public Policy and Management and Community Planning. Both are designed to prepare students to be problem solvers for communities.

The Public Policy and Management major introduces students to the world of public service. Its interdisciplinary approach allows students to understand public service from various perspectives and across different levels of government, with an emphasis on local government.

Our Community Planning major provides a strong foundation in urban geography, political systems, and social matters, covering topics such as urban planning, community engagement, data analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), sustainability, and public management. Students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to address and solve various community issues, preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Graduates of these majors are well-positioned to pursue well-paid, meaningful careers in local government.
